Designing calm at the Margaret Tobin Centre, Flinders Medical Centre.

The Margaret Tobin Centre at Flinders Medical Centre, Bedford Park, is a significant mental health facility named in honour of Dr. Margaret Tobin, a respected leader in South Australian mental health reform.

When designing for mental health and acute care infrastructure, managing reverberation time is vital for lowering patient anxiety and maintaining clinical privacy. The specified design solution successfully addresses these complex acoustics while keeping sustainability at the forefront.

The final design features the DecorZen®️ Micro panels in Tuscan Oak, paired with DecorSorb acoustic lining. This product has thousands of ultra-fine 0.5mm perforations absorb sound while keeping the timber's natural grain and warm Tuscan Oak finish visible. Coupled with DecorSorb backing, the system significantly reduces noise and reverberation, supporting clear speech intelligibility and a quieter, restful environment.

This project stands as a premiere example of how thoughtful acoustic design can elevate healthcare spaces. Decor Systems is proud to continue contributing to building projects that enable healing and space for mental restorative practices that help the community now and for generations to come.

Built on precision. Now backed by proof.

Decor Systems is proud to share that we’ve added PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) accreditation to our sustainability credentials.

It’s a meaningful step forward for us, and one that reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible sourcing. PEFC Chain of Custody Certification reinforces our promise to sourcing timber from sustainably managed forests and providing greater transparency across our supply chain.

It’s a milestone we’re genuinely excited about, and one more way we’re helping architects, interior designers and industry partners create beautiful sound-shaping spaces without compromising sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.

At Melbourne’s La Trobe University Health Clinic, good acoustics are part of the learning experience. For a recent project, Decor Systems supplied DecorZen acoustic panels featuring perforation patterns from our Contours of Country designer range, including Connections in Country – Reverse by Keisha Leon (Waanyi & Kalkadoon).

The design team sought a solution that would reduce noise in busy teaching and collaboration zones, deliver a refined aesthetic aligned with the campus architecture, and embed a meaningful cultural narrative connected to Country.

DecorZen panels absorb up to 88% of unwanted noise, while the Contours of Country patterns add subtle, site‑inspired geometry that tells a deeper story. Keisha Leon’s Connections in Country – Reverse was selected for its flowing forms that symbolise transformation, continuity and connection, echoing the ever‑changing nature of Country. The result is a calm, focused environment that supports clear speech and concentration while honouring First Nations storytelling through design.

Credit to the project team for delivering a space where acoustics and country‑led design work together to improve the student experience.

Paddington’s Moreton Bay figs are living landmarks, with some specimens over 150 years old and canopies up to 30m wide.

These trees inspired Figs of Paddington, a 7.5m tall artwork by artist Jonty in the UNSW Art & Design faculty at the Paddington Campus. The piece translates layered canopies and dappled light into a bold, contemporary form that also performs as a key acoustic element in a busy, open teaching space.

To realise this vision, the project team selected for a robust, non‑combustible acoustic solution that can handle heat, moisture and humidity without warping. The artwork combines three of our fibre cement products, each with a different perforation pattern to balance aesthetics and sound performance:

✅ DecorLux Max – compressed fibre cement panels built for tough environments
✅ DecorSlot – slotted fibre cement panels for linear acoustic detail
✅ DecorLux – perforated fibre cement lining panels for consistent acoustic control

Together, these systems diffuse noise and improve speech clarity while meeting the durability and fire‑rating demands of a high‑traffic education building.

Credit to Jonty for the concept and design, to MCA Architects and MLP CO. project team who delivered the installation with precision in a live campus environment.

If you are an architect or interior designer working on cultural, education or adaptive reuse projects and you are curious about how we combined heritage storytelling with acoustic performance, get in touch with our team to learn more about the product selection and detailing.

At Decor Systems, we believe great outcomes are built on collaboration, care, and a shared commitment to quality. We are proud to see several projects we have contributed to recognised for outstanding design, reflecting not only the vision of the architects and project teams, but also our ongoing commitment to delivering high performance, sustainable acoustic solutions.

Hymba Yumba Independent School has received multiple awards and national shortlistings, with Deicke Richards placing culture and student wellbeing at the centre of the design. Our Contours of Country range features in the multi purpose hall, combining acoustic performance with artwork by Jenna Lee in collaboration with Blaklash Creative. The result is a space that supports learning while celebrating connection to culture and Country.

Emmanuel College Warrnambool, designed by Baldasso Cortese Architects and constructed by Nicholson Construction, received the Henry Bastow Award for Educational Architecture. As the acoustic solutions partner, we supplied CEWOOD wood wool and Vogl Deckensysteme GmbH perforated plasterboard across key learning and sports spaces. Acoustic performance was considered from the outset, ensuring environments that are both functional and enduring.

Yarra Ranges Special Development School was also commended at the 2026 Victorian Architecture Awards for its campus redesign. Featuring DecorZen® and DecorSorb acoustic linings, the spaces create a warm and calm environment that supports focused, inclusive learning outcomes.

Being part of these projects is something we are incredibly proud of. Each one represents a shared commitment to quality, sustainability, and thoughtful design that enhances the way people experience the built environment.

BRIGIDINE COLLEGE

Designed by Fulton Trotter Architects and expertly delivered by Stephen Edwards Constructions and Bright Star Interior, Brigidine College’s refurbishment showcases a thoughtful blend of design and functionality.

Once Decor Systems products were specified, we embarked on an extensive value management journey with the architect and builder to achieve the desired aesthetic, optimise performance for the sports hall and design workshops, and select the most suitable materials for each space.

Sports halls are naturally echo-prone, so we specified Decor Trend and Decor Style in SmartLook Curly Birch for the interior, with DecorLux in the same finish for exterior areas. Decor Trend was custom-curved in our factory to elevate the architectural detail and deliver an NRC of 0.75, pairing seamlessly with the decorative warmth of Decor Style.

We also manufactured oversized 25mm sliding doors with integrated ventilation to meet both acoustic and functional needs. Colour-matched in SmartLook Curly Birch, the doors blend effortlessly into the sports hall, ensuring a cohesive and refined finish across the full wall elevation.

A truly collaborative project. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g23QyZBP
