NSW Health is warning the public of high-dose M**A tablets (ecstasy) in circulation across NSW, found to contain around twice the average dose of other M**A tablets.

The purple-grey tablets have a ‘Punisher’ skull design on the front.

Medical Director of the NSW Poisons Information Centre, Dr Darren Roberts, said consuming high doses of M**A has been linked to cases of serious illness and death in NSW.

“M**A can cause severe agitation, raised body temperature, seizures or fits, irregular heart rhythm and death,” Dr Roberts said.

“Other risks include taking M**A in combination with other stimulants, such as amphetamines or co***ne.

“The amount of M**A in a tablet or capsule can vary a lot, even within the same batch. The health risks from M**A are greatly increased if high amounts (including multiple doses) are consumed over a short period.

“It is very important to remember, if you or a friend has taken drugs and feel unwell, you won't get into trouble for seeking medical care. If you or a friend feels unwell, please seek help immediately by calling Triple Zero.”

NSW Health has issued a warning regarding severe opioid overdoses in the Penrith area in the last month.

Nitazenes (potent synthetic opioids which can be stronger than fentanyl and hundreds of times more potent than he**in) have been found in drug samples related to a cluster of around 20 overdoses reported in Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. Investigations into these cases are ongoing.

NSW Health Chief Addiction Medicine Specialist, Dr Hester Wilson said it is important that people recognise the signs of an opioid overdose early and know how to respond.

“Opioids such as he**in can cause pin-point pupils, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slowed breathing/snoring and skin turning blue/grey and can be life-threatening.

“One of the dangers of illicit drug supply is the strength and contents of the substance you are getting is unknown and can be inconsistent.

“In light of this detection, people who use drugs such as he**in should carry naloxone.”

Take home naloxone is a life saving measure which can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, including with nitazenes.

Nitazenes can last longer in the body than he**in and naloxone. Higher and repeated doses of naloxone are often required as well as hospital treatment.

Anyone who uses naloxone should call Triple Zero (000) for an Ambulance immediately after use for follow up care. You won't get into trouble for seeking medical care. If you feel unwell, or if your friend feels unwell, do something about it.

NSW Health is warning of the dangers of tablets which are being sold as M**A (ecstasy) and found to contain a potent opioid (nitazene).

Three people presented to Sydney hospitals over the past weekend, after taking as little as half of the tablets. One patient was admitted to the ICU and has since been discharged home.

NSW Health warns the tablets are an orange/red colour and rectangular shape, with a red bull logo and wording, and were sold as M**A (ecstasy).

NSW Poisons Information Centre Medical Director Dr Darren Roberts said drugs containing potent opioids such as nitazenes can cause unexpected and severe overdose or death.

"It's important people recognise the signs of an opioid overdose early and know how to respond. Taking the appropriate action early can save a life,” Dr Roberts said.
