A smarter, more sustainable refrigeration solution is now powering the newly opened IGA Windmill Hill in Tamworth, NSW. Proudly delivered by the Hussmann and Ultra Refrigeration teams, this project showcases the benefits of natural refrigerant technology at scale.
We supplied a fully integrated natural refrigerant system built around Panasonic Transcritical CO₂ Outdoor Condensing Units and a range of Hussmann refrigerated display cases (P Series and V Series), covering frozen food, dairy, meat, produce, cool rooms, freezer rooms, and liquor storage.
A standout feature of the system is its use of R744 (CO₂) as the primary refrigerant — a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 1, eliminating reliance on high-GWP synthetic gases across the store's entire refrigeration platform.
Key benefits of this technology include:
• Lower Environmental Impact — R744 replaces high-GWP synthetic refrigerants across all major applications
• Precise Temperature Management — inverter-driven CO₂ units paired with Carel/BOSS controls and electronic expansion valves
• Built for Australian Conditions — factory-engineered transcritical CO₂ technology suited to local climates
• Full-Store Coverage — a unified platform spanning ~88.8 kW of CO₂ load and 95+ kW total connected load
To bring it all together, our team, with the support of Ultra Refrigeration, managed the system design, installation, commissioning, and full project coordination across multiple refrigeration systems, delivering a modern, energy-efficient store from the ground up.
Congratulations to the IGA Windmill Hill team on a fantastic new store!
