Sometimes the right tool isn’t sitting on the shelf. Our mates over at Northside Hi-Performance Centre needed a hand and this is what we came up with.

We needed to repair some pulled threads in an SR20 block, and while purpose-built jigs do exist, we needed a solution now.

So we designed and machined our own drilling and tapping jig that references the existing bolt pattern, ensuring the drill and tap stay perfectly square to the block.

A few hours spent making the right tool meant the repair could be done accurately and confidently.

The right tool doesn’t always come in a box. Sometimes you build it.

Another run of the mill M54 Vanos service.

Customer stated there was a rattle, and loss of low end torque.
We verified that neither cam was moving and moved onto servicing the vanos.

This starts with stripping the unit and inspecting for damage. We then test the solenoid coils for shorts, ensuring they show the correct resistance.
We then bench cycle the solenoids to check for movement.

Once everything is cleaned up, we rebuild the unit using only the best kits from our partner Getvanosparts by Beisan Systems.

Once reinstalled we completed a full clear of the engine adaptations, and confirmed the unit was working.

Our customer reported a drastic difference in driveability, and is happy his car is now one step closer to the way it left the factory!
