We spend way too much time checking things and testing them. We test every spring, file every 3 bolt chain guide, and we thoroughly test EVERY oil pump we build.
Our young friend brought us a bargain Facebook Marketplace pump someone had assembled with a backing plate that was way too thick and some unknown pump gears. The backing plate being a few mm too thick moved the timing guide pivot and will cause issues in the timing system. The gears were the noisest we've heard and the spray was excessive indicating loose clearances and huge losses.
This pump was working way too hard and had very poor pressure regulation, maxxing out our gauge. That's not a good thing. Don't run that much oil pressure. The rest speeds are exactly the same and no volume has been adjusted. There genuinely is a huge difference!
Little details matter and make the difference between good and great. We're lucky to be able to test every pump we use and we can't immediately spot a pump that will cause problems down the line. It's not just about maximum pressure and in fact we generally encourage people run less than what they've asked for.
We want 20psi at least for a warm idle and spec our medium pumps for 80psi and our high pressure pumps for 100psi.
