We have been through a few of these now.
Work in this industry does not taper. It stops. A builder goes quiet and the orders that were certain last month are not there this month.
What does not go quiet is the cost of cutting. The saw is still financed. The shift is still rostered. The operator is still on the floor. The cost holds while the revenue falls away.
That is the part almost nobody prices properly, and it is easy to see why. Cutting feels variable because it happens piece by piece. It behaves like a fixed cost the moment the work slows down.
We are not telling you to stop cutting. Keep your core production on the saw you have already paid for. The question is whether the smaller componentry needs to go through it too, because that is the part you can order to the work in front of you and carry nothing when the work is not there.
The plants that come through a quiet quarter in reasonable shape are usually the ones carrying less fixed cost in every truss.
If fixed cutting costs are squeezing your margin, talk to us about what supplementing could look like in your plant.
