Bonded screed can go down at 10mm. Unbonded needs at least 40mm.

Bonded goes onto sound concrete over a slurry coat, laid wet on wet. Don't let the slurry skin over before the screed goes in.

Unbonded sits on a slip sheet or the membrane, with no slurry. Use 200 micron poly at least and overlap the sheets by 200mm.

Water-based or cementitious? Let the season decide.

Winter: cementitious. ACTFLEX 989 recoats in four to six hours, while 906 WPU needs six or more. On a short winter day, that can be the difference between one coat and two.

Summer: water-based. ACTFLEX 906 WPU is one part, so there's nothing to mix. 989 is two part, which means mixing every batch and using it within about two hours.

One catch on hot days: 906 WPU is rated for ten to twenty six degrees and 989 for ten to thirty five. Check the forecast before you pick.

Waterproof it and tile it on the same day.

ACTFLEX 900R and 1300R are butyl sheet membranes. Hot air weld the laps, skip the fillets and bond breakers in the corners, then flood test, screed or tile from one hour after install. 900R is for internal wet areas. 1300R goes inside and out, including balconies, planter boxes and under pedestal systems.

Touch dry is not cured.

That's the trap with a polyurethane cove under a water based membrane. The fillet skins over and feels ready, but underneath it's still curing and still giving off plasticisers.

Before you run a bead, check the sealant's datasheet. If it doesn't say it's compatible with water based membranes, don't assume it is.

Why add sand to epoxy primer?

Because cured epoxy goes dense and smooth. Whatever you put over it has nothing to grab, so it can peel off.

Sand fixes that. Broadcast clean dry sand into the second coat while it is still wet. The epoxy sets around the grains and the next layer has a rough surface to key into.

Skip the sand and you are working to the recoat window on the data sheet. Miss it and the next coat has nothing to hold on to.

HV or SL? Depends where it's going.

ACTFLEX 929 HV is the non sagging one. It holds its shape on walls and upstands without slumping or dripping.

ACTFLEX 929 SL is the self levelling one. It flows out to a flat, seamless finish on floors and can slump on vertical surfaces.

Both are moisture cured polyurethane membranes. Both are in the Forspec birthday sale. Buy five of either and the sixth is free. Same product, no mixing.

New cast in situ puddle fl**ge coming soon. This is the Puddle Pro 100mm Leak Control Fl**ge.

The ribs are the difference from the cast in situ fl**ges already out there. If the membrane ever fails, water has to weave its way around every rib through the concrete before it gets anywhere.

Three more things built in. A sieve, so you can get into the rubber shell during construction and drop the lid back on. A seat for a tile insert, facing whichever way you need. And tie wire holes, so it stays fixed to the cage and the vi****or can't push it up.

Someone at home pays for the long days.

Every tradie running their own shop wears the hours like a badge. Nobody counts what those hours cost at home. You are not there for any of it, then you walk in the door with a bad day still on you and someone has to take that as well. Most only work out what that was worth after it is gone.
