🔥 FIRE & LIGHT TURNS ONE TODAY! 🔥

One year ago today, Fire & Light Artisan Blacksmith officially began.

What started as an idea to combine steel, stained glass, fire and light has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of.

Over the past 12 months, I’ve created sculptures I never would have imagined a year ago, met some wonderful people, taken part in exhibitions and shows, completed commissions, installed pieces in gardens and homes, and watched many of my creations head off to their new owners.

There have been plenty of sparks, a lot of welding, countless pieces of glass, some experiments that worked…and probably a few that didn’t! 😄

Most importantly, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported Fire & Light over the past year — whether you’ve bought a sculpture, commissioned a piece, visited me at a show, shared or commented on a post, recommended my work, or simply followed along to see what I make next.

I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better first year.

One year down — and plenty more ideas still to come.

A new Tower Fire Pit design idea — inspired by an unmistakable Tasmanian silhouette. 🔥⛰️

I’ve been experimenting with incorporating the silhouette of Cradle Mountain into the opening of one of my Tower Fire Pits.

The challenge was to simplify that distinctive skyline enough that I can cut it by hand with an angle grinder, while still making it instantly recognisable as Cradle Mountain.

I think the combination of the Corten steel, the mountain silhouette and the fire behind it could make this a very Tasmanian fire pit.

Preparing the glass for Archie Pies 🥧

The next stage of the Archie Pies sculpture is underway — marking out the stained glass ready for cutting.

Looking at some of these shapes, I think I may have made life a little difficult for myself! 😅 There are some very tricky cuts coming up, particularly those tight curves and sharp internal points.

But that’s part of the challenge of turning a design into steel and stained glass.

Next job… very careful glass cutting!

A little more progress on the Archie Pies sculpture commission. 🔥

It’s always satisfying seeing a sculpture move from an idea into steel — piece by piece, weld by weld.

There’s still more work to come, but Archie is certainly starting to take shape.

Archie Pies is taking shape! 🐾

The steel framework is now complete, and I’m working on the support and lettering that will become part of the finished sculpture.

This is one of my favourite stages — all those individually shaped pieces of steel have come together and Archie’s character is really starting to show.

Next up, sand blasting and weather proof paint.

A new commission is taking shape — Archie Pies. 🐾

Starting with a drawing and slowly bringing Archie to life in steel. These progress shots show the hand-shaped and welded steel framework coming together, ready for the stained glass that will eventually fill each section.

I always enjoy this stage of a sculpture — seeing the character begin to emerge from what started as lengths of flat steel.

More of Archie Pies to come as the build progresses.

Drifting Light

A closer look at how Drifting Light changes as you move around it.

The combination of steel and stained glass means the sculpture is never really static — sunlight catches different colours and textures, making some pieces glow while others become more subtle.

I still see tectonic plates shifting across the surface of another planet in the design, but abstract art is always open to interpretation.

I particularly love the way the colours dance in the changing light.

Drifting Light

I love the way the colours dance in this sculpture.

With every change in the sunlight — and every step around it — different pieces of stained glass seem to come alive. Some glow intensely, while others reveal textures and colours that almost disappear from another angle.

To me, the shapes look a little like tectonic plates shifting across the surface of another planet — but that’s the beauty of abstract sculpture. Everyone seems to see something different.

Drifting Light

There’s something about this sculpture that reminds me of tectonic plates shifting across the surface of another planet — fractured shapes moving and drifting against one another.

But what I really love is the stained glass. As the sunlight changes throughout the day, the colours dance across the sculpture, constantly changing depending on where you stand and how the light catches it.
