Small trees, big stories 🌳

A bit of everything at Guildford Nostalgia Markets today.

Started the day putting my Azui pick to work on a stubborn trip hazard in the stall, then took a wander around the markets.

Classic cars, vintage machinery, traditional crafts and plenty of interesting people. Even caught up with Zac from Laughing Fish Forge who was putting on blacksmithing demonstrations and showing traditional skills in action.

Always worth getting away from the stall for a look around.

Day two Blade And Leather Festival, I brought along my workbench and sharpening stones to put a fresh edge on an old Japanese temple carpenter’s slick.

A solid weekend of tools, craft and conversations. Thanks to everyone who came down to support niche small businesses and custom makers, stopped for a chat or took a tool home. These events happen because people turn up and support them.

A couple of months ago I ran a Japanese plane workshop at Wood Affair in Bibra Lake, in conjunction with the Fine Woodwork Association of WA Fine Woodwork Assoc. WA
We covered the full process of setting up a Japanese kanna — sharpening the blade, fitting it to the dai, setting the chipbreaker, tuning the sole and getting it ready to take a proper shaving.
We’ve been flat out with moving and workshops since then, so I’m only just getting back to sharing some of the footage.
A big thanks to Kevin Luff - Wood Affair, for letting us use his workshop and making the day possible.

Japanese weeding tools hit different.

Three new Azui Japanese garden tools tested in rough sandy soil.

The cultivator breaks up clumps and loosens soil. The hoe cuts and clears around weeds. The weeding rake pulls through grass, roots and loose debris.

Simple tools, made for actual garden work.

Three new Takemoto sickles are now live on the website.

Each one has a different blade shape and use, from tighter pruning jobs through to general garden clean-up and weeding.

I’ve added them to the Takemoto collection now.

Three new Japanese sickles are being added to the range.

A compact 90mm Piccolo, a 90mm long-handle version, and a proper left-handed sickle.

These came from customer feedback at Kalamunda Garden Festival, so I took them out today to test them properly before they go live.
