Our Newcastle team recently had the pleasure of attending the inaugural EngBall in Newcastle, hosted by Engineers Australia – Newcastle Division and Young Engineers Newcastle. As a proud event sponsor, Agilitus was honoured to support an initiative dedicated to bringing together emerging professionals, industry leaders and engineering practitioners from across the Hunter region.

Representing Agilitus on the night were Kieren Tomalin, Mathew Bunn, Shaun Reid, Jasmine Gibson and Jeremy Cooper, who joined fellow engineers in celebrating the strength, diversity and future of our profession in the local region.

Jasmine, Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer said, “The event provided a fantastic night of networking, great entertainment and a vibrant atmosphere, bringing together professionals from across the Hunter to celebrate engineering and build meaningful industry connections.”

As we continue to grow our presence across Newcastle and NSW, we remain committed to investing in the communities where we live and work.

Earlier this month, Agilitus’ Jayden Catto, Cameron Maher, Matt Watts and Sergio Neves attended the ARA Western Australian Rail Industry Dinner.

The event brought the industry together to explore the opportunities ahead and the future of rail in Western Australia.

Jayden Catto, Head of Rail, said the evening highlighted strong confidence in the future of Western Australia’s rail sector.

“The keynote speakers spoke to continued investment in transport infrastructure, integrated transport planning across rail, bus and ferry networks, and commuter rail achievements.”

“In particular, heavy haul and freight rail continue to attract significant investment, with a range of upcoming projects supporting freight productivity. This presents exciting opportunities for Agilitus as we’re already delivering work across these sectors.”

As freight volumes are expected to grow significantly by 2030, rail is becoming an increasingly important part of Western Australia’s freight network. It will play a crucial role in supporting the long-term development of a stronger, more efficient transport network across the State.

Agilitus looks forward to continuing to support the development of rail infrastructure across Western Australia.

Congratulations to our latest Technical Award winners who have been recognised for their agile responses, strong client collaboration, and standout project contributions.

Jen Lee, Principal Structural Engineer, is being celebrated for delivering a rapid remediation (10 days from identification to fabricated solution!) for a previously unknown structural defect to support a complex brownfields TLO project. He is also being celebrated for his clever use of bolted connections to manage existing column misalignments enabling the installation of a gantry crane without site welding.

Darran Starbuck, Design Manager – Ports and Marine, design expertise and collaborative approach helped develop a marine works solution that responded to key navigational requirements while minimising impacts on the current works. Darran is constantly celebrated for his significant experience in coastal engineering as well his ability to demonstrate his ideas in the 3D space to support clients in making critical decisions.

Nominated by their peers, this award reflects the technical excellence Jen and Darran bring to their work – well done to both!

At the Carrington Basin within the Port of Newcastle, Agilitus delivered a non-conventional design solution to relocate a critical marine aid and enable construction within an existing seawall environment.

Duratec Senior Project Coordinator Ben Reardon said, “It has been a pleasure working with Agilitus throughout the design and construction phase of the Navigational Aid 52 project. Their team consistently demonstrated professionalism, technical expertise, and a proactive approach to problem solving. Their commitment to safety, quality, and efficient project ex*****on has been evident at every stage, contributing significantly to the successful completion of the works.”

Agilitus Senior Engineer Luke Lyons said, “Delivering a project successfully is the baseline. What really makes the difference is how we work with our clients. By prioritising close collaboration and open communication with Duratec and the Port of Newcastle, we were able to respond quickly to any challenges to deliver a key port infrastructure.”

At this year’s International Conference for Bulk Materials Handling (ICBMH), Agilitus’ Shaun Reid, Senior Mechanical Engineer, and Liam Withey, Mechanical Engineer, were among the 85 technical presenters sharing ideas, insights and innovative solutions across bulk materials storage and transportation.

Liam took a deep dive into a case study using coupled DEM–SPH modelling to represent a cohesive tailings material, a non-traditional application of these methods, that provided confidence in the design.

While Shaun explored methods to improve the prediction of bulk material loads on bins and silos, comparing current international standards with custom DEM analysis to motivate continued development of the standards allowing for improved industry outcomes.

"As bulk materials handling is such a central part of what we do, the conference provided a valuable opportunity to highlight our technical capability, discuss the challenges facing the industry, and connect with other industry leaders,” said Shaun.
