Migration isn’t Australia’s problem.

It’s one of our biggest competitive advantages.

I say that from decades on the ground - running factories, negotiating in China and across scores of countries, and working across multitudes of cultures daily.

I was born in Malaysia.

As such, I speak Mandarin, Malay, Indonesian, Japanese, Cantonese, Hokkien and Hainanese. And English.

None of the first 7 are widely spoken in Australia.

But they are spoken where deals are made…
- Where trust is built…
- Where manufacturing actually happens.

Here’s the reality:
👉 Australian businesses don’t fail offshore because of cost.
👉 They fail because they don’t understand how to operate across cultures.

I’ve unpacked this from a commercial, real-world perspective in the latest SourceWorxs Insider Series.

If you’re serious about manufacturing, exporting, or scaling globally — this is worth your time.

📩 Read & subscribe (in the comments section below).

There is a growing narrative in Australia positioning in-bound migration as a constraint on our economy. From where I sit - operating between Australia, China and a very broad range of other countries for decades - that narrative is not just inaccurate layered with half truths, it’s commercially d...

The 13.9% ‘Surprise’ at the Wharf.

Importing steel rod in coil from China? Your landed costs just changed. As of April 23, 2026, Australia has implemented a new 13.9% anti-dumping duty.

https://www.industry.gov.au/sites/default/files/adc/public-record/2026-03/675-10-notice-adc-adn-2026-28-findings-of-continuation-675.pdf

For many AU/NZ businesses, this isn't just a number: it’s a margin-killer that often isn't spotted until the goods hit the wharf and the customs bill arrives.

At SourceWorxs, we believe procurement shouldn’t come with surprises. We act as an extension of your team, auditing every step of the process. We don’t just find suppliers; we deep-dive into landed costings, customs codes, and regulatory shifts to catch these risks before you place an order.

With 40 years of experience across China and Australia, we help you navigate trade complexities so you can focus on growth. Don’t let a 13.9% oversight impact your bottom line.

Today marks the beginning of Qingming Festival in China.

A time that is often described simply as a public holiday — but in reality, carries far more weight than that.

For many, it is a return. Not just to hometowns, but to roots.

Families gather to clean ancestral graves,

offer incense and flowers,

and spend quiet moments remembering those who came before them.

For others, especially those far from home,

Qingming is observed more quietly.

A pause. A reflection. A moment held internally.

What stands out each year is how deeply personal this time is.

There is no single way to observe Qingming.

Yet across cities, factories, and offices, you can feel a shift:

– A softer pace

– A quieter tone

– A different kind of presence

From an operations perspective, this often translates to:

• Slower responses

• Production pauses

• Logistics moving into holiday mode

• Teams prioritising family commitments

But behind these practical realities is something more important:

A cultural moment grounded in remembrance, reverence, and continuity -

where respect for ancestors and those who came before is deeply embedded in everyday life.

Qingming itself traces back over 2,500 years to the time of the Zhou Dynasty,

later formalised during the Tang Dynasty.

It stands as a reflection of China’s formidable civilisation -

one shaped not only by modern capability,

but by thousands of years of tradition, lineage, and cultural memory.

In our experience working on the ground in China,

this reverence is not abstract - it shapes behaviour.

It influences how relationships are built,

how trust is earned,

and how people show up for one another - both personally and professionally.

By being conscious of this and respecting what matters beneath the surface -

we engage differently with our suppliers, partners, and team.

And in doing so, we are met with something that cannot be negotiated in a contract:

Respect.

For those of us working across borders,

Qingming is a reminder of something simple but powerful:

Understanding China isn’t just about language or process - it’s about recognising the values that guide people.

And making space for them.

Wishing everyone observing this weekend a calm, reflective, and meaningful Qingming.

Global trade just shifted. Iran isn’t just controlling the Strait of Hormuz with missiles: they’re doing it with currency. Reports show they now require passage fees in Chinese Yuan, not US Dollars. Even Japan is complying to keep cargo moving.

This directly challenges the 50-year "Petrodollar" system that has underpinned global finance since 1974. When the foundation of global trade moves, the ripples reach every corner of manufacturing.

For Australian and NZ businesses sourcing from China, this signals a future where the Yuan holds more sway over supply chain costs and stability. It’s no longer just about product price; it’s about navigating the changing gravity of global trade.

At SourceWorxs, our teams are on the ground in China. We see these shifts in real-time, helping our clients manage complexity and de-risk procurement. We act as an extension of your team to ensure your supply chain stays resilient.

Is your business prepared for this shift?

The shipping world just got a lot smaller. With both the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz restricted, we are looking at the most significant freight challenge since COVID-19.

Here’s the reality for AU & NZ manufacturing:
🚢 Carriers like Maersk, MSC, and Hapag-Lloyd have suspended major routes.
💸 Emergency surcharges and war-risk premiums are already hitting landed costs.
⚠️ Critical delays are expected in semiconductors, pharma components, fertilizers, and raw materials.

This isn’t just a "logistics issue": it’s a risk to your business continuity.

At SourceWorxs, our teams in Hangzhou are already working on contingency plans for our clients. Whether it's rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope, exploring air freight alternatives, or shifting production priorities, we are on the ground managing the chaos so you don't have to.

Now is the time to audit your supply chain. If you’re worried about how these disruptions will impact your 2026 production schedule, reach out to discuss contingency planning via DM or email [email protected].

The Red Sea is a mess again. If you are shipping from China to Europe, your logistics just got a lot more expensive.

Major carriers are rerouting vessels away from the Middle East, which means three big risks for your bottom line:

1. Transit Chaos: Longer routes mean more variability and rolled cargo.
2. Cost Spikes: War risk premiums and rate resets are already appearing.
3. Equipment Gaps: When vessels pull out of normal loops, container positioning breaks down.

For our AU/NZ wholesale and manufacturing clients, this is a working capital killer. You’re likely carrying more inventory just to protect your service levels.

Do this now:
- Rebaseline lead times. Last month’s benchmarks are dead.
- Get routing in writing. Confirm the transhipment contingency plan.
- Audit Incoterms. Ensure no ambiguity on who pays conflict surcharges.
- Build a Delay Playbook. Pre-approve moves for 7, 14, or 21-day delays.

Have you seen rolled cargo or surcharge notices hit your inbox this week?

If you need help navigating the madness with a team on the ground in China, DM me or email [email protected].

Why do so many R&D projects stall after the patent is granted?

It’s a pattern we see often. Legal protection is secured and the vision is clear, but commercialisation is where the real complexity begins. Sourcing, prototyping, and scaling for mass production require a very different set of skills than the invention phase.

At SourceWorxs, we act as an extension of your client’s team. With our boots on the ground in China and 40 years of experience, we bridge the gap between a protected idea and a market-ready product. We handle the heavy lifting: design, engineering, and quality assurance: ensuring the original intent is never lost.

To my network of patent attorneys: you’ve protected their IP. We’re here to help them navigate the next chapter and bring those innovations to life while minimizing offshore risks.

I’d love to have a chat to see if we can help your clients successfully design, develop, and manufacture their products in China. Have you seen this challenge come up for your clients lately?

The #1 fear your clients have about China manufacturing? IP protection.

As a patent attorney, you’ve secured your clients' innovations, but the fear of leaked designs often stalls progress. It’s a major roadblock for Australian and New Zealand businesses looking to scale.

At SourceWorxs, we tackle this with a true "eyes and ears" approach. We aren’t just managing spreadsheets from a distance. With our own production facility and dedicated team on the ground in Hangzhou, we provide the physical oversight needed to enforce strict ethical standards and IP protocols.

We act as a direct extension of your client’s team, protecting their IP from the first prototype through to full-scale production. We bridge the gap between local design and Chinese manufacturing, turning protected ideas into successful products: minus the risk.

Have your clients ever hesitated to manufacture in China due to IP concerns?

Let’s discuss how our unique on-the-ground model in China protects your clients' innovations while they scale. DM me for a chat!

A patent doesn’t manufacture a product.

As a patent attorney, you secure your clients' most valuable assets: their ideas. But once IP is protected, many innovators hit a wall. They have the legal rights, yet lack the supply chain, engineering expertise, or 'boots on the ground' in China to turn a blueprint into a market-ready reality.

We see this gap often. Moving from design to a scalable product requires more than a patent; it requires deep manufacturing knowledge, material sourcing, and rigorous quality control. It’s not just about finding a factory; it’s about finding the right one and managing them effectively.

At SourceWorxs, we act as the bridge. We help ANZ businesses through industrial design, prototyping, and full-scale production. By managing the process via our own facility and trusted partners, we minimize risk and ensure the vision becomes reality.

If your clients have secured their IP but are stuck on the 'how' of manufacturing, let’s have a chat about how we can help them bridge that gap.
