Meet Dan Simpson – Structural / Civil Engineer and Project Manager

Dan joined Westlake Punnett in early 2025 bringing across a substantial design and project management experience gained over tenures with Hutchinson Builders, Piety Group and Engine Room Co., the latter a niche design management consultancy Dan co-founded.

Since starting with Westlake Punnett, Dan has cut his teeth on the design-side of the business, developing strong structural and civil engineering design skills using SpaceGass, 12d, AutoCAD and other industry-standard tools. Dan has also been invaluable to our organisation from a project management and design management perspective, acting as the lead on a number of successful bids and tenders throughout 2025 as well as the Lead Project Manager for current projects including the Coffs Harbour Shared User Path Network, The Jabour Weir Fishway, Katoomba Town Centre Activation, among others.

Dan embodies what an engineer, project manager and design manager should be at their core: Exceedingly curious and eager to learn, open to innovation and novel solutions, quick to grasp new concepts all underpinned by a pragmatic and level-headed demeanor.

Outside of work, Dan is an avid outdoorsman who loves to surf, fish, hike and play music. These are interests shared by a number of our cohort in Wollongong, which made his onboarding at Westlake Punnett seamless and has made him a great asset to our growing team culture (we have even convinced him to come for some runs at lunch!)

Project Profile - Wagga Wagga ATP Stage 3

Some fresh photos of the first of many links and elements forming part of the Wagga Wagga Active Travel Plan Stage 3. The first link pictured, Exhibition North Link, connects the Exhibition Centre and the Sturt Highway with compliant Shared User Pathways and a 26m pedestrian bridge spanning Marshalls Creek.

Westlake Punnett were engaged by City of Wagga Wagga to undertake the detailed design of 8 links across the City which totalled approximately 20km of shared user path network in total. As these shovel ready projects become fully funded, the town will begin to transform and we can’t wait to see the remaining links come to fruition!

Ladex Construction Group Pty Ltd has done a great job on the construction of what promises to be a great asset to the Wagga Wagga community!

Project Profile - Kangaroo Point Boardwalk

A bit late to the party, but we are proud to share some photos of this great piece of public infrastructure completed in 2025 for Hornsby Shire Council as part of a D&C joint effort between , Teleo Design Pty Ltd, Wagners and . An awesome project team that worked together to achieve a great result for the public.

The Kangaroo Point Boardwalk and Shared User Path is a beautiful 1km stretch consisting of approximately 500m of concrete shared user path and 500m of FRP boardwalk (both structure and decking) which provides uninterrupted access for cyclists and pedestrians between Kangaroo Point, Dolphin Point Marina and Brooklyn.

The site faced challenges with access, tides and flooding as well as significant environmental constraints with the proximity of Mangroves in and around the site.

The project team worked together to come up with novel solutions for the installation of driven FRP piling and precast concrete bridge abutments plus careful staging to assist with minimising the impact of lengthy approvals.

A great asset for the Brooklyn area and for Hornsby Shire Council!

Meet Nathan Gundlach – Senior Civil Engineer

Nathan came to Westlake Punnett in 2023 after stints in both the private and public sectors working as a Civil and Flooding Engineer. In 2023, Nathan provided immediate impact to our project delivery teams in terms of Civil Design capacity whilst also significantly bolstering our flood modelling and analysis capabilities.

Nathan has continued to be the driving force behind our companies’ reputable flood modelling and drainage design contingent and has taken charge of the development of junior engineers in civil design, 12d modelling, flood modelling in TUFLOW, drainage design and more. On the project side, Nathan has played a big role in many key projects for Westlake Punnett & Associates in the past year including Coffs Harbour Active Travel Plan, SES Coniston Redevelopment and Bluescope 4 Area Truckwash Redevelopment to name a few.

Personally, Nath is a kind, approachable and just a stand-up guy who continually makes a significant contribution to our office culture being the primary driver of our office lunch runs (and some large rides to work) since his arrival at Westlake Punnett.

Nathan is a great asset to our team and is a model within our organisation for what we strive for at Westlake Punnett.
