Young merinos set to make their mark 🐑

The Turretfield Research Centre Team has been busy in the field, marking over 526 lambs ahead of the SA Merino Sire Evaluation Field Day on Friday 12 June.

At the field day, breeders, farmers, and industry representatives will have the chance to get up close and examine:
🐑 Fleece traits including weight, diameter, colour and character
🪰 Skin wrinkle, and face, breech and crutch cover (important for preventing fly strike)
📏 Jaw, face, pastern, and toe morphology

With SA’s sheep industries (including meat, wool and skins) generating annual revenue of around $1.36 billion (and over 58 million kilos of wool!), understanding and optimising Merino reproductive genetics is big business.

DNA testing is a critical part of our Merino industry now so we are really appreciative of Perth's XytoVet second year in sponsoring and supporting Classings Classic 2026.

I visited their laboratory last year after a hefty classing trip in W.A. and was blown away with the high tech involved with this exciting business. The XytoVet staff were only too happy to guide me through the Lab and answer all of my 'average Joe' queries that were politely resolved!
