Young merinos set to make their mark π
The Turretfield Research Centre Team has been busy in the field, marking over 526 lambs ahead of the SA Merino Sire Evaluation Field Day on Friday 12 June.
At the field day, breeders, farmers, and industry representatives will have the chance to get up close and examine:
π Fleece traits including weight, diameter, colour and character
πͺ° Skin wrinkle, and face, breech and crutch cover (important for preventing fly strike)
π Jaw, face, pastern, and toe morphology
With SAβs sheep industries (including meat, wool and skins) generating annual revenue of around $1.36 billion (and over 58 million kilos of wool!), understanding and optimising Merino reproductive genetics is big business.
