Most engineers have used strain gauges.

Far fewer truly understand why their measurements are wrong.

Incorrect gauge selection. Poor installation technique. Instrumentation setup errors. These are the most common, and most quietly damaging, sources of measurement error in structural and mechanical testing.

The data looks plausible. The decisions that follow it are not.

This is the gap Bestech Australia's Strain Gauge Workshop is designed to close.

After training over 400 engineers across Australia, one pattern is consistent:
The biggest improvements in measurement accuracy don't come from better equipment.

They come from better fundamentals.
We're bringing the workshop to two cities this May:
📍 Melbourne — Wednesday, 6th May 2026 | The University of Melbourne
📍 Adelaide — Wednesday, 27th May 2026 | Adelaide University

Led by experienced applications engineers. Delivered in partnership with The University of Melbourne. Built around the fundamentals that actually change how you measure, not just in the workshop, but on every job after it.
Seats are limited, secure yours now!

Simulations and virtual platforms do many things extremely well.

In engineering education, they allow students to explore systems that would otherwise be difficult to access in a classroom environment, such as mining environments, offshore oil and gas facilities, high-voltage power systems, aerospace systems, or hazardous chemical processing plants.

For example, simulations can help students:
• Visualise complex systems such as process plants, power systems, or control loops
• Safely observe failure scenarios that would be dangerous in real life
• Run multiple experiments quickly by adjusting parameters
• Repeat the same scenario many times to better understand system behaviour

In many cases, simulations make learning more efficient and more accessible.
Students can see how systems respond to changes instantly and under safe environments. Educators can demonstrate concepts that would normally require large-scale industrial equipment.

Therefore, for introducing theory, system behaviour, and overall process understanding, virtual environments can be incredibly powerful.

But engineering practice rarely unfolds exactly the way a model predicts.
And that’s where an important gap begins to appear...

17/03/2026

Can engineering education remain effective without physical interaction with real systems?

Before debating that, it’s worth understanding why virtual learning is becoming so attractive in engineering education.

Modern simulation platforms can replicate complex systems that would otherwise be difficult, expensive, or unsafe to operate in a teaching environment. Students can observe system behaviour, adjust parameters, and see the results instantly.

AI-powered tools can also support learning by explaining concepts, generating examples, and guiding students through problem-solving processes in real time.

For universities and training institutions, the advantages are significant:
• Lower equipment and maintenance costs
• Access to learning from anywhere
• More students trained without expanding physical laboratories
• The ability to simulate rare or dangerous scenarios safely

In many ways, virtual learning expands what educators can teach.

Students can experiment more freely, repeat scenarios many times, and visualise complex systems that are difficult to observe in the real world.

It’s no surprise that many institutions are exploring how far these technologies can go in engineering education.

But this also raises an important discussion:
When we move learning into simulations, what aspects of engineering training improve, and what might we lose?
