All jokes aside, we used a porta power to pre-stress it before welding the back brace in. Then I welded continuously around the tubes so the weld shrinkage followed its way around the joint rather than pulling hard from one side.

Not saying it doesn’t shrink, because every weld does, but it definitely helps minimise the distortion and keep things predictable.

I know a lot of diff shops run a solid bar through the housing while welding them up, but not all of us have access to that sort of tooling. Sometimes a bit of welding knowledge and understanding how heat affects a job can go a long way too.

Turned out pretty square in the end, so we’re happy with that.
