Zac and Lachie are currently overseas, visiting Multikraft headquarters in Pichl bei Wels, Austria as part of an international study tour focused on biological and microbial farming inputs. Multikraft is a family owned company with over 45 years of experience developing ecological alternatives for agriculture and horticulture, built around the role microorganisms play in soil health, sustainability and natural regeneration. They are travelling as part of a larger group of growers and businesses from Australia and internationally, and alongside time at Multikraft, they have been doing farm visits across the region to see firsthand how growers in other parts of the world approach soil health, crop nutrition and intensive cropping systems.

It has been a great opportunity to compare notes with international growers and bring fresh ideas back home. We are looking forward to sharing what they have learned and how we are able to apply these in future.

Six-spotted mite (SSM) is the most significant invertebrate pest of avocados in Western Australia. As a spider mite in the Tetranychidae family, SSM feeds on leaves rather than fruit, but under high mite pressure trees will defoliate, exposing fruit to sunburn.

With spring here, now is the time to be out monitoring. Getting on top of SSM numbers before trees push new growth means starting the season under threshold rather than playing catch-up once pressure builds. Not every mite in the canopy is a problem — tydeid mites are scavengers, while phytoseiid and stigmaeid mites are natural predators that help keep SSM populations down, so correct identification matters as much as the count itself.

Drop into the shop if you’d like to talk through an SSM monitoring program for your block.

Zac and Lachie have been busy working with our clients to create fertiliser plans tailored to their orchard’s specific needs. With years of experience, they understand how important it is to have the correct nutrient balance to maximise yield and fruit quality.

Each plan takes into account soil health, crop load, variety, and seasonal conditions.

If you’re after a customised fertiliser program this season, get in touch with Zac or Lachie.

Phytophthora root rot remains one of the biggest threats to avocado orchards in the Southern Forests. It’s a soil and water borne pathogen that thrives in wet, poorly drained conditions, causing yellowing foliage, canopy dieback and declining yield as feeder roots blacken below ground.

Good drainage, orchard hygiene and healthy soil biology all help reduce risk. Where infection is present, phosphonate applications by trunk injection or foliar spray remain the most effective way to suppress the pathogen and support recovery.
