How long do lithium batteries last is one of those questions where the honest answer is “longer than you’d think, and it depends on how you treat it.” Unlike a lead-acid battery, which tends to give you a fairly narrow, predictable window before it noticeably fades, a quality LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery has a much wider realistic range — and where you land in that range comes down to a handful of habits that are easy to get right once you understand them.

That caravan, boat, or 4WD that's been sitting since last season? It's easy to worry a flat battery is waiting for you when you finally hook it up.

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge quickly when left unused — sit too long and you risk sulfation, permanently reducing capacity. It's often made worse by parasitic loads: alarms, trackers, or other electronics left connected that keep quietly drawing current even while everything's switched "off."

LiFePO4 is built differently: an extremely low self-discharge rate means it holds its charge through long periods in storage, so it's far more resilient to those background loads and less likely to be flat (or damaged) when you're ready to go again.

If you're pulling gear out of storage this season, give it a charge and a once-over before you rely on it — but a lithium setup means you're starting from a much better position than lead-acid ever gave you.
