DESIGN INSIGHT // Rust Patina at Parramatta Police Station, Parramatta NSW

Weathered steel has a warmth and depth few materials can match, but it doesn’t suit every building. On a busy civic site, ongoing oxidation and rust run-off onto paving and nearby surfaces can rule it out.

The refurbishment of Parramatta Police Station called for that same character in a material suited to a high-use government facility. The answer was 1,116m² of Vitradual 3mm solid aluminium in Rust Patina, a prefinished finish that captures the richness and variation of naturally weathered steel.

The result is a warm, textured facade with a strong civic presence. It has the look of aged metal on a building where the real thing wouldn’t be practical. Vitradual is deemed non-combustible, suitable for Type A and B construction, and backed by a 15-year warranty.

VITRAFIX // Moisture management in rainscreen facades

Moisture and condensation are among the most important considerations in facade design, and managing them well starts behind the cladding.

In a ventilated rainscreen, sub-framing separates the cladding from the building structure. This creates a cavity where air can circulate and moisture can drain away. It’s a simple principle, and it protects the long-term performance of the wall.

The NCC is moving the same way. NCC 2025 introduces mandatory drained and ventilated cavities in Climate Zones 6, 7 and 8, along with strengthened condensation provisions. Even for projects outside those zones, the change shows the industry’s broader shift towards cavity-based rainscreen facades.
