🌊 Building a more resilient Byron Bay 🌊

Major progress continues on the Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade, one of the most significant flood resilience projects currently underway in the Northern Rivers.

With major drainage works now completed through the rail corridor and South Lawson Street Carpark, construction is progressing east along Byron Street towards Fletcher Street as this important project moves closer to completion.

BASEC Engineering is proud to be supporting Byron Shire Council through the delivery of these works, with our own Sean Hammill acting as the Principal’s Authorised Person (PAP) on the project.

The Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade is designed to reduce the impacts and frequency of flooding through the town centre, helping protect local businesses, residents and critical community infrastructure while improving the long-term resilience of one of Australia’s most iconic coastal communities.

Current works include:
▪️ Drainage installation
▪️ Kerb and gutter construction
▪️ Road asphalting
▪️ Footpath upgrades
▪️ Pedestrian access management

This project is being funded through a partnership between the Australian Government, NSW Government and Byron Shire Council, including support through the Infrastructure Betterment Fund, the Northern Rivers Recovery and Resilience Program, and Byron Shire Council’s Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan Reserve.

Projects like this are about more than infrastructure. They are about strengthening communities, reducing future flood impacts and creating safer, more resilient places for people to live, work and visit.

Great work by Byron Shire Council and everyone involved in delivering this important project.

We’re proud to be delivering the structural design for the new raised pedestrian crossing and retaining wall works on Byron Street, Bangalow for Byron Shire Council.

This project is all about improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and long-term durability within a busy community precinct — while also navigating existing services, retaining wall interfaces and challenging site conditions.

The design includes:
• Raised pedestrian crossing infrastructure
• Reinforced retaining wall systems
• Integrated drainage solutions
• Footpath and stair connections
• Expansion and control joint detailing
• Service clash mitigation around existing sewer infrastructure

Projects like this might look simple from the street level, but behind every finished outcome is detailed engineering, coordination and constructability planning.

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program — an important investment in making our regional communities safer for everyone.

A huge shoutout to our design team for another practical and buildable solution supporting safer community infrastructure across the Northern Rivers.

🚧 Progress Update | Piggott Street, Nambucca Heads 🚧

Works are continuing at Piggott Street in Nambucca Heads, where our team is currently remediating a landslip through the extension of an existing gabion basket retaining wall.

This project has required strong communication and collaboration with nearby residents due to the close proximity of the works to private property — including construction activities partially within a resident’s backyard.

Like much of the region recently, wet weather has presented a few challenges and caused some delays, but the team continues to make solid progress on site.

Tomorrow marks an exciting milestone with the installation of the first gabion basket 👏

Another great example of practical infrastructure solutions helping protect local roads, properties and communities.
