Datsun 260z getting run in and tested on the dyno. Tried many camshaft position changes and even a larger inlet manifold. Very well mannered engine and good useable power

Datsun 1000 Ute. Too many times we are seeing professional engine builders with no idea on how to dial in a cam or even check it when they are assembling . Even without a cam card or any specs there is quick and very simple measuring one can do to atleast evaluate where it is and whether it is advanced or re****ed in relationship with the crankshaft. This vehicle came in and was lacking in power and had no torque curve. Valve lifts at tdc were measured and cam timing found to be approx 13 degrees advanced. A quick jig was made to modify the cam sprocket and additional holes were drilled at slightly changing alignments to one tooth. With the starter motor removed and a pointer positioned in its hole for a tdc reference, I could easily try which combination gave me what the cam manufacturer recommended. Engine power was increased by atleast 12% on average across its entire rpm range. It now has character and kept making more power the higher it revved, which is what it was designed and expected to do. Such an important and critical aspect to any engine building and people don’t understand simple ways of checking. If it’s not right….work out how to correct it

Ford Pinto valve/camshaft and rocker geometry set up. These engines do not run an additional lash pad on the valve stem tip, so installed heights, camshaft base circle diameter and running clearance all affect valve lift. After some testing and measuring with a dummy spring and some different thickness packers to space the distance between the valve face and seat, it was determined, that with all the components being used, valve stem tips needed to be reduced by 3mm (.120”). Rocker arms were then modified to guarantee contact only with valve stem and not the retainer. Wipe on the rocker arm was slightly rearward from centre and gross valve lift increased by 14%, matching the camcard’s specifications. If items were installed without checking, rocker arm wipe favoured the front edge and valve lift was reduced by 1.5mm or .060”. So many variables with any engine and every aspect must be checked and evaluated

Holden FC. An excellent example of a survivor car, if not immaculate in my opinion. Referred to me by another shop, to sort its tune, and correct some issues. I rebuilt and modified the distributor, replaced the cumbersome points and condensor system with an electronic upgrade kit, which required extensive modifications to have it work properly. Too many of these kits don’t fire the coil at the right time so that the rotor button is in align with the distributor cap. Known as “rephasing”, it must be checked and rectified when needed. Tappets adjusted when hot as they should be, and some minor carb issues addressed. Main jet size was increased by .003” which is .075mm but what a difference it made to its driving. Not a sports car by any means, but just needed finalising in its set up to maximise its potential to behave appropriately. Ready for its intended long journeys ahead and I’m sure the owner will be smiling the whole way.

Toyota 2TG heating up its pipes. We weren’t running a cooling fan off the engine, which I highly recommend for street engines, due to the fan blades fracturing and disintegrating and not willing to risk it destroying itself on the dyno. When it is making 103kw at the wheels at 6000rpm, and not much air moving over the engine, thin walled stainless pipes always put on a show.

1966 Shelby GT350 K Code. Genuine and extremely valuable. Needed major tuning changes, and with a factory fitted solid cam, valve clearances need to be checked and adjusted periodically, but do sound very tough when idling. Sporting a massive 715cfm Holley, jetting had to be modified considerably to obtain a more suitable mixture trend and maximise power. I’m baffled as to why they persisted on such big carburettors back in the day, and I would love to change out the main body of the Holley for a 465cfm version, and put all the external hardware back on. Would appear original, but perform better everywhere. Immaculately presented and I am honoured to assist with its improvements.

MG TC supercharged. Barely running and terrible to drive when presented. Engine had been rebuilt and I can only assume that previous tuner or modifier, had very little knowledge in this field. I removed carburettor to inspect and repair and found a piece of thick rubber hose with steel insert pressed into inlet manifold. Why…I do not know. Possibly chasing velocity. Then I found a 7 ounce weight on top of carb piston to aid fuel mixtures. To go to this extent when there is several different spring tensions available, is bewildering to say the least, and all of this are tuneable options that are easily obtainable to get the best results from SU carburettors. After some minor repairs, rubber insert and weight removed, and the strongest optioned spring installed….vehicle was transformed. Personally…I would love to see some more intake runner length and volume, and also a smaller SU, as the 2” is well oversized for this application. Some better planning and advice goes a long way to the final results. If you don’t know don’t do.

Lotus 7. Pontiac Grand Prix. Morris Mini. Just a couple of different vehicles getting tuned and fuel mixtures checked and adjusted. Set and forget. Simplify and modernise ignition distributors and set up the carburettor and enjoy the driving that now becomes effortless and requires basically no maintenance or future adjustments. All yielding both better economy and performance, even spark plugs don’t need changing as often and the engine oil stays cleaner for longer too. It’s a no brainer for some.

Brand new build. This is a follow up post. Engine had barely run for 30 minutes. Another individual that should not be working on cars. I can only assume that he is not even a mechanic. To take someone’s money and sell s**t like this………..is actually against the law

Toyota 2tg. Came in for final tuning and sorting but found way too much wrong on the assembly. Had to remove engine due to excessive oil leaks and the lack of attention to detail, was astounding. The absolute filth inside meant that this had not even been cleaned. I had to rebuild the entire engine and only reused the pistons and rings. Everything else was machined or replaced or both. Using a 3T crank and some mild cams….power was very respectable in the end, even with the factory exhaust.

RT141 Corona. Factory fitted with 18RG. Imported from Japan and all the best ingredients but so far off the pace. What is it with the Japanese tuning mentality. 60 degree celsius running temperature. Massive 44mm primary header pipes. Long duration 304 TRD camshafts and thick head gasket that lowers the compression . Metal gauze filter screens in the carb trumpets and exhaust system. 9.4:1 air fuel ratio. Coldest spark plugs available. If not for an amplified ignition system I’m sure it would have misfired. This engine had so much built up carbon that it had leaking valves and very poor performance. After removing head, de carboning pistons, chambers, valves and seats, replacing 2 bent exhaust valves, lifting the compression to assist the cams, recurving ignition, sorting the cooling system, re timing the cams, and soft mount converting the Mikunis it was finally tuneable and responsive. Torque up by average over 30% and peak power by a whopping 77%. A beautifully presented car and now drives like it looks.
