About The House have been removing asbetos for over 20 years. However, on the 25th November 2020 they became the first Safe Asbestos Testing & Removal Company to officially open a shop front office located at Kariong Shops, Curringa Road Kariong on the Central Coast. The open day was supported by Kerrie Bendeich from Master Builders Association and adfa - Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia including President Barry Robson, Vice-President Maree Stokes & a number of members and supporters. During the open day, the launch of the Central Coasts very first Asbestos Testing Drop-Off Service was widly supported. The Drop-Off service makes testing safer, easier and cheaper for residents, tradies and businesses to test building material for asbestos. John the owner explains "Over the last 20 years of removing Asbestos I realise the concern coming in contact with Asbestos can bring. However, it doesn't need to cause unnecessary stress or set-backs when renovating or building. All you need is a small sample of the material that may contain Asbestos (size of your thumbnail) sealed in a clip-lock bag. Drop the sample at our recently opened shop front office in Kariong Gosford and we will test the material for asbestos with our NATA Accredited testing facility. Our aim is to make it simple, cheap and fast for tradies & renovators to test; making it safer for themselves and their families." The cost for using the sample drop off service is half the price of having to arrange a specialist to come out and take a sample. The service is also a much quicker alternative preventing unnecessary delays on site. Simply contact the office on 0414 012 747 or complete the Sample Drop-Off form on the website. Drop a small sample (thumbnail size is sufficient) of the material in a sealed clip-lock bag to the Kariong office for testing. Testing usually takes 24-48 hours. If the sample is negative you are advised via telephone and there is nothing more to do. If the sample is positive we also offer an asbestos removal service. All testing is confirmed with a document certifying the same. For under 10 sqm the asbestos may be removed as a DIY project. Therefore, our specialised services also include free removal advice and information for all tradies or renovators wishing to remove the asbestos themselves, with the option to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect themselves during thei own asbestos removal. We do however advise against anyone trying to remove asbestos themselves as the importance of using a company like About The House Safe Asbestos Removal is we know the health risks associated with asbestos poisoning which are potentially life-threatening. We are highly trained and licensed professionals who remove and dispose of this dangerous material safely, legally and which protects our environment. All asbestos materials are removed and disposed according to the strict regulations of SafeWork NSW and NSW EPA requirements. Did you know that Australia was one of the biggest users of asbestos in the world. Asbestos is the name used for a group of naturally occurring minerals. They have resistance to high temperatures and fire and make effective insulators and so were popular in building products in Australia from the 1940s to 1987. Asbestos is extremely fibrous specifically when disturbed by power or hand tools. When asbestos materials are broken the tiny fibres are easily breathed in where they can become trapped in the lungs causing cancers of the lung, ovary and larynx as well as mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lung). These cancers often develop decades after exposure to asbestos. Working with asbestos has been banned for almost 20 years but it is still a major workplace hazard. In Australia asbestos kills around 4000 people every year, that's more than 3 times the annual road toll. Until 1990 asbestos was a very popular building material and has been used in 1 out of every 3 Australian homes. This high statistic means there is a good chance tradies including carpenters, plumbers, electricians and builders will disturb or come across asbestos and are therefore at risk. In most cases you can't tell if a material contains asbestos just by looking at it. If you suspect an area contains asbestos stop what you are doing until the situation is confirmed through testing at a NATA accredited agency. It is also really important that asbestos waste is disposed of correctly and at a licensed facility. There are big penalties for the illegal disposal of asbestos which includes putting it in a domestic rubbish bin, waste skip or dumping it in the bush! There are lots of places to go for help and advice including the Asbestos Safety & Eradication Agency: www.asbestossafety.gov.au
About The House - Safe Asbestos Removal are also always available to provide free over the phone advice and support for anyone who fears they have come in contact with asbestos. Alternatively, information is available on our website www.aboutthehouse.net.au
About The House have been proud supporters of adfa - Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia for nearly a decade. Founded in 1990 and located in Sydney; 2020 marked adfa’s 30 year anniversary of offering support services for victims and their families diagnosed or affected by a devastating asbestos related disease including asbestosis & mesothelioma. One of adfa’s achievements includes bringing to justice in the courts James Hardie's asbestos company who has been charged and instructed to continue to fund those how have fallen or continue to fall victim to his asbestos providing company. With our recently opened shop front office on the Central Coast we have created a synergy with adfa to become their Information Centre allowing them to further extend their support throughout the Central Coast. Belonging to an adfa support group is like belonging to a family. Support groups reduce isolation, empower individuals and restore hope. About The House commend adfa’s tireless effort as they support victims, inform communities and campaign for change.
