Nyrstar Australia - Hobart

Nyrstar Australia - Hobart The Hobart Zinc Works produces high-quality Australian zinc and other important products essential for a low carbon future.

Nyrstar is a well-known part of the Hobart landscape – we are located on the Derwent estuary and have been contributing to the community for over 100 years. We are one of the world’s largest producing zinc smelters and our products are exported to global markets. We have a team of around 600 people (both direct and contract employees) and are a major contributor to Tasmania’s economy. Our priority

for our site is to provide a safe environment that puts our people first. We are proud of the progressive and innovative approach we are taking to achieve this. The strong relationship the smelter has with our community has been developed over many years and continues today, through community meetings, sponsorships, partnerships and active participation in the community. We are one of the world’s largest zinc smelters in terms of production volume. We produce zinc from concentrate: special high grade (SHG), zinc galvanising alloys, and zinc die casting alloys are all produced from our zinc smelting process. We convert the raw material into zinc metal for use in numerous end-use applications. Zinc provides excellent corrosion resistance to iron and steel. It is also a relatively hard metal with a low melting point, making it suitable for die casting, but still soft enough to be formed, rolled, or extruded. Zinc can be found in everything from construction and infrastructure to transport and industrial machinery, from communications to electronics, and from consumer products to human health.

We recently gathered with friends, family, and colleagues at the beautiful Cornelian Bay Boathouse to celebrate a truly special occasion – our 2025 Long Service Awards.

In today’s world, long service is increasingly rare. That’s why we’re so proud to recognise:

✨Mark Adams, Darren Jones, Chris Hill, Mark Schuettpelz and Jeffrey Cracknell for 25 years of dedication
✨Shane Cleary, Andrew Stanton, Craig Westwood, Andrew Moate, Fred Niekrasz and Terry Hinds for an amazing 40 years of service
✨ And Mark Hall for an extraordinary 45 years at the Hobart Zinc Works! 🙌

Long service is more than just a number. It’s about showing up day after day, giving your best, and demonstrating loyalty, resilience, and determination - especially when working in a plant that’s been running for 109 years.

One of the highlights of the night? Three of our award recipients began their fitter and turner apprenticeships on the very same day - forging not just careers, but a lifelong friendship.

We also recognise the partners, families, and friends who stand behind our long-serving team members. Your support makes these achievements possible.

Congratulations and thanks to all our award recipients - your commitment has helped shape the culture, strength, and success of our Zinc Works.

🎉Happy 109th Birthday, Nyrstar Hobart!🎉

Founded in 1916 as the Hobart Zinc Works, we’ve been contributing to Tasmania’s prosperity for over a century.
As the first major industrial customer in the state, we helped support the creation of Tasmania’s hydro-electric scheme allowing the generation of affordable electricity to build homes, businesses, tramways, and industries throughout Tasmania.

From these humble beginnings we have grown into one of the largest zinc producers in the world supporting around 1891 jobs, 231 local businesses, and contributing over $500 million a year to the Tasmanian economy.

The zinc that we make in Hobart today is critical to the world, because it’s used in making products that reduce emissions like wind farms, solar infrastructure and batteries. Zinc can also play a valuable role in unlocking the production of a number of other critical minerals which is something we are exploring to help Australia play a greater role in strengthening global supply chains for many years to come.

💙 Here’s to 109 years of innovation, partnership, and prosperity – and many more to come! 🥳
