I might be a couple of weeks late but a big
happy one hundred and second birthday to an absolute
legend of a man and pioneer of hot rodding. Ed
Iskenderian, born on July 10th 1921. Ed shaped, influenced
and in lesser words made hot performance engines what
they are. We wouldn't have the performance cars We have
today without men, like Mr Iskenderian. Not only that, he is
a veteran of WWII. Happy birthday Ed, may you be with us
for years to come. Thanks for being an influence on my life.

Here’s a pair of Volvo TD63 cylinder heads that has come through the shop. The injectors sleeves were leaking badly. New sleeves were installed in place of the old ones, new exhaust guides were also fitted. Pressure tested and refurbished. The fire rings machined to factory specifications of depth. A wash and a paint job and they’re ready to be put back to work

⚠️warning, crate motors are usually low performance economic engines ⚠️A complete revision of this 350 SBC was called for when the customer realised the crate motor he bought wasn’t packing the punch he hoped it would have. The compression ratio was calculated and adjusted to 10:1, flat top pistons replaced the dish tops, Crow Cams came to the party with a hydraulic roller cam, tie bar roller lifers and rockers, using the Crow Cams push rod checker, high tensile single piece construction push rods supplied by Nason Engine Parts where installed. Rollmaster 9 position heavy duty double row timing chain to replace the budget factory one. High volume oil pump and wide screen oil pick up with a steel collared driver. Traditional Double Hump “Fuelie” heads, ported new stainless exhaust valves. Edelbrock dual carbs and manifold keep her sucking and breathing, along with tall top rocker covers to clearance the rockers. Thanks again to my customer, Crow Cams, Edelbrock and Nason Engine Parts for ability to build this angry little mouse motor 🐭

Nice refresh on this LS2 that came through the shop. Crow cam and spring package installed to a reconditioned set of heads, the block was chemically cleaned, a small amount decked off the surfaces to true it back up. A set of SRP .005” over pistons to go into the bores, the connecting rods had .002” honed out of the little ends to allow the slightly bigger wrist pins through.

Another long motor build. This Toyota 1HD-T came in for a freshen up, a minor overheat and a damaged crankshaft due to the woodruff keys rounded over. A very good condition secondhand crankshaft was sourced, 0.50mm oversize in the cylinder bores, new wrist pin bushes fitted and honed to spec. Block surface decked and the head completely refurbished with new valve guides all round. As well as all new internal components and oil pump, along with a new harmonic balancer. The injectors and pump were rebuilt by Neil at Rural and Regional Diesel Service

One of the full engine builds that’s come through lately. This Nissan RD28T had lost oil pressure due to the oil pump drive on the crankshaft. Causing number three big end to obliterate itself. A replacement crankshaft along with a con rod was sourced, a hardened oil pump drive collar was fitted and a complete refresh of the engine taking it to 0.50mm oversize in the bores. The injectors and pump were sent away for a service and new nozzles fitted. Elvis the workshop dog is giving the end result the tick of approval.

Sometimes you really get put to the test, refinishing this centre plate from a Mitsubishi Fuso which was unable to be bolted to the flywheel rotary table, I adapted a three jaw lathe chuck to it, used three Chevy hydraulic lifters to space my heights with packing shims, used the test dial to dial in the unworn surface, then started the regrinding procedure. Never give up! There’s always a way

“I know someone who does it cheaper” and this is the kind of things you find. This SBC 350 came to me after it was assembled poorly by someone else. Multiple things during assembly where ass about. Piston rings where installed upside down, incorrect sealants used throughout the engine, the head gaskets had been sprayed with a bonding agent, and this little sucker right here. The oil pump drive shaft and oil pump on a SBC are locked together with a nylon sleeve that has a lock inside it. Please whatever you do, use the right parts not a piece of garden hose. If you’re not versed in engine assembly DON’T TOUCH IT, pay someone who knows what they’re doing to make the job right.
