A challenging project is well underway on a three-level sheet pile excavation with hydraulic bracing, constructed to facilitate a 4-metre deep, in situ sewer manhole installation.

What makes this project unique is the five-sided sheet pile configuration, which required precise planning, installation, and tight tolerances to ensure stability, safety, and access throughout the build.

A big credit to the team for executing this installation safely and efficiently in a confined excavation environment. Great teamwork, solid engineering, and strong attention to detail are keeping the project on track.

One of our experts is Barry Crowley, our General Manager Engineering, who has over 20 years' experience as an engineer in the temporary works sector. In 2025, he helped update Australia's shoring standards, resulting in the new AS 4744.1:2025 – Shoring and trench lining, Part 1: Design standard for all prefabricated shoring solutions made from steel and aluminium.

United Rentals was asked to help support the structural safety of a furniture store that suffered extensive fire and water damage, so the building could be taken down from the roof level in preparation for its rebuild.

We engineered and installed three levels of complex propping, using a combination of our Shore Prop 400s, Titan Props, Aluminium Tilt Props, and UB beams. Our team worked closely with the demolition team, organising installations around their work and remaining on-call and responsive throughout the project.

This was a rewarding project that not only met the customer's expectations but also helped build a strong, long-term relationship.

United Rentals is proud to share that our range of Steel and Aluminium Trench Shoring Boxes complies with the design requirements of the new AS 4744.1:2025 - Shoring and Trench Lining, Part 1: Design.

This updated standard replaces the 2000 version and now applies to all prefabricated shoring solutions made from steel and aluminium. It also introduces ratings based on UDL and triangulated pressure load configurations, and changes to elastic deflection limits and the designations for Trench Boxes, Trench Panels, and supporting struts.

Complying with this updated standard ensures our range of shoring solutions offers safety and stability during excavation projects of all sizes!
