The first major fire warnings of the season are already appearing.

Queensland fire authorities responded to more than 180 fires over the weekend, with hot, dry conditions contributing to increased fire activity.

While this report comes from Queensland, the message is relevant for property owners, farmers and rural communities across Australia: preparation is always easier before fire season arrives.

⚠️ A real-world reminder of the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
This ATSB video shows an in-flight fire involving a lithium-ion power bank stored inside a passenger's backpack in an overhead locker on a Virgin Australia flight.

Fortunately, cabin crew were able to quickly extinguish the fire and the aircraft landed safely. However, the incident highlights how rapidly thermal runaway can escalate and why damaged, defective or poorly stored batteries pose a serious risk.

Following the incident, Australian airlines updated their policies around carrying and storing power banks during flights. Additionally, CASA has developed the packright safe flight campaign, addressing dangerous goods and providing packing tips for checked baggage and carry-on.

As lithium-ion batteries become more common across aviation, transport, emergency services, mining, industry and everyday workplaces, organisations should consider how batteries are stored, transported and managed.
