⚠️ Cyber risk runs through the whole farm business

Busy periods like seeding create the kind of haste and distraction cyber scams rely on.

Cybersecurity risk on farm sits across both the office and the paddock.
It can involve fake invoices, bank detail scams and compromised email accounts — as well as the digital systems used in day-to-day farm operations, including online grain marketing platforms, cloud records, remote sensors, connected machinery and other agtech.

Andrea Carmody explains why physical distance is no safeguard, and outlines some simple checks that can reduce risk:

• Pause before clicking links or opening unexpected attachments
• Verify bank detail changes by phoning a trusted number
• Use strong passwords and turn on multi-factor authentication
• Check who has access to office devices, online accounts, remote sensors, connected machinery, machinery platforms and farm networks
• Back up important records and know who to contact if something goes wrong

Protect your crop — and your chemistry

With the 2026 grain growing season underway across the Esperance Port Zone, it’s important that fungicide decisions made this season manage current disease pressure while also helping reduce the development of fungicide resistance.

This is not just a wheat powdery mildew issue. Fungicide stewardship also matters for managing key canola diseases, including sclerotinia and blackleg — particularly as canola hectares remain significant across the region.

In a current SEPWA Newsletter article, Greg Warren from Farm & General and Ben Parkin from Syngenta explain why this matters now.

Powdery mildew is considered a high-risk pathogen for developing fungicide resistance. In South Australia and Victoria, powdery mildew management has already become very difficult, with widespread resistance to a number of products that are still effective in WA.

That pathway is not inevitable for the Esperance Port Zone — but delaying resistance will rely on sound fungicide management and product rotation strategies.

The article outlines why early monitoring and timely product decisions matter, including:
• why wheat powdery mildew is becoming harder to control
• why fungicide resistance matters in both cereal and canola disease management
• the importance of rotating fungicide modes of action
• why product choice and timing at GS30–31 can influence season-long control
• when growers should consider stubble testing for fungicide sensitivity shifts
• why the cheapest spray may not always be the best-value spray

Their key message is clear: the most expensive spray is the one that doesn’t work.

This is timely reading for growers and advisers making fungicide decisions during the 2026 season.
