Planning a retaining wall? Here’s the full materials checklist:

📋 STRUCTURE
☐ Concrete sleepers (plain, woodgrain or rockface)
☐ Galvanised steel H Posts (100UC or 150UC depending on wall height)

💻 DRAINAGE
☐ Ag pipe (slotted, 100mm)
☐ Drainage aggregate / blue metal
☐ Geofabric (to wrap the aggregate)

🛠️ INSTALLATION
☐ Rapid-set concrete (for post footings)
☐ Plastic wedges (to lock sleepers in place)
☐ Sleeper grabber (for safe handling)

Why do retaining walls fail? It’s almost always one of these four reasons:

1️⃣ POOR DRAINAGE
Water builds up behind the wall, creating hydrostatic pressure. Without ag pipe and gravel backfill, even a well-built wall will eventually move.

2️⃣ UNDERSIZED POSTS
Using the wrong post for the wall height is the most common structural mistake. A 1.2m wall needs a very different post spec to a 600mm garden bed.

3️⃣ INSUFFICIENT EMBEDMENT DEPTH
Posts need to go deep enough to resist the soil load. The rule of thumb: 1/3 of total post length in the ground.

4️⃣ WRONG MATERIALS
Timber sleepers in wet or high-load applications. Posts that aren’t rated for the wall height. Skipping geofabric.

Get the spec right from the start and your wall will last decades.

Concrete vs Timber Sleepers — which should you use?

It’s one of the most common questions we get at FPM. Here’s the honest answer:

🪨 CONCRETE SLEEPERS
✔️ 50+ year lifespan
✔️ No rot, no termites, no warping
✔️ Structural-grade for walls over 600mm
✔️ Available in decorative finishes (woodgrain, rockface)
❌ Heavier — may need machinery for large walls

🪵 TIMBER SLEEPERS
✔️ Easier to handle and cut on site
✔️ Lower upfront cost
✔️ Natural look for garden beds and low walls
❌ Shorter lifespan, especially in wet conditions
❌ Not recommended for walls over 600mm without engineering

For most Melbourne retaining walls — especially anything over 600mm or in a wet area — concrete is the better long-term investment.
