Alzheimer’s is now Australia’s second leading cause of death, affecting 500,000 people and 1.6 million carers. It can start in a person’s 40s, slowly impacting memory, personality, and movement before a rapid decline.
While age, genetics, and lifestyle are key risk factors, staying active—like walking 10,000 steps a day—can lower risk.
Prof Bryce Vissel from St Vincent’s Hospital says treatments are limited, but new research has found a ‘switch’ in nerve cells that may slow or stop the disease.
