More power, less fuel—a new lease on life for FV Calypso!

Captain Tim Dean of Calypso Fishing Adventures partnered with Seapower Australia to re-power FV Calypso, his 47-foot O’Brien Sports Fisher, in Port Stephens.
After many years of service, the Cummins QSM 11 engines were replaced with MAN i6-800 LE426 12.4L inline six-cylinder engines and new Twin Disc MGX 5126A transmissions.
Danny Frizzle of Black Marlin Marine completed the installation. At approximately 150mm longer than the QSM 11, the MAN i6 engines fitted well into the existing space.
Seapower’s Ben Roff and Brad Bell carried out installation checks and commissioning, with impressive sea trial results:
✅ 25-knot cruise with an estimated 10–15% fuel saving
✅ 31.7 knots fully loaded

With extra power and modern MAN common rail electronic technology, Calypso feels like a new boat—and Tim’s smile says it all!

Great to see some of our Seapower dealers in Singapore for the recent MAN Mechanical Training and iSea EDC17 Electronic Training.

Earlier this year I was reading about Seapower’s involvement in the re-power of Ultimate Lady, one of those boats that has become such a recognisable part of the Cairns marlin fleet.

(And yes, we’re going to claim ownership. Hey Tom lol.)

Sadly, Ultimate Lady won’t be back in Cairns this year for the 60th Anniversary, and she’ll certainly be one of those legendary boats that will be missed around Number 10 and Lizard.

It got me thinking, what are some of the iconic boats from the Cairns fleet that you’ll miss seeing this year?

🚤 Another successful MAN-powered project delivered! MV Jaguar South Sea Cruises
Seapower Australia is proud to have supported AusShips with the successful delivery of the 2nd Fast Ferry for South Sea Cruises, Fiji.
The project included a full turnkey MAN V12-D2862 LE435 1,200 HP medium-duty engine package, coupled with ZF 3050 transmissions.
From Seapower Aust placing the order to MAN Germany, to successful sea trials, the project was delivered over approximately 18 months, with Seapower working closely with the AusShips team throughout the build, installation and commissioning process.

The results speak for themselves:
* 30.7 knots full speed, heavy ship
* 24.5 knots operating speed
* 284 L/hr combined fuel consumption @ 1,864 RPM

The vessel performed above the requirements of South Sea Cruises, making for another highly successful MAN-powered vessel.
A special thank you to Transmarine Asia Pacific Pty Ltd for assisting Seapower and with the successful sea trials.
This is the 3rd vessel operating for South Sea Cruises in Fiji powered by MAN — another fantastic project delivered by the AusShips and Seapower Australia teams.

Fred Hollows is the 7th vessel of 9 Emerald class ferries proudly getting upgraded to MAN V12 D2862 LE444 engines, increasing reliability.
