With decades of experience behind the business there is no engineering job too big or too small for this crew. Watson Marine Engineering owner Greg Watson has had a passion for boats since a young apprentice in the 60’s. Some 50 years on, there is very little he doesn’t know about the marine industry. In 1999, upon the opening of Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard, Greg moved his family and marine

engineering business from Brisbane & has never looked back.

Nothing like the smell of fresh metal and the sound of a lathe to make a marine engineer’s head turn 😍

Three brand new sets of propeller shafts machined over the last couple of weeks, fully aligned and ready to keep things running smoother than a well greased bearing.

Always satisfying to watch raw stock become something ship shape and seaworthy.

What works best?

Every sealing solution has its own strengths and weaknesses, so let’s take a closer look at the three most common types of shaft seals and break down their pros and cons ⚓️

🦭 PSS Shaft Seal
A mechanical dripless seal that uses a carbon fl**ge and a stainless rotor to create a watertight seal.

✅ Pro’s
• Dripless shaft seal
• Long lasting carbon/stainless parts
• Reliable seal even under pressure

❌ Con’s
• Aged or damaged bellows can leak
• Requires precise installation
• Needs water cooling for high speeds

🌊 Tides Marine SureSeal
A dripless lip seal system that uses a polymer housing and a replaceable lip seal around the shaft.

✅ Pro’s
• Also fully dripless
• Super easy to replace seals
• Self aligning design reduces wear

❌ Con’s
• Lip seals wear faster than mechanical seals
• Requires a very clean, smooth shaft surface
• Susceptible to damage from debris or dry running

📦 Traditional Stuffing Box (Packing Gland)
The old school gland packing system compressed around the shaft to slow water ingress. Not technically “dripless”

✅ Pro’s
• Simple and proven over decades
• Inexpensive to maintain
• Easy to repair with basic tools
• Very forgiving in harsh conditions

❌ Con’s
• Typically drips by design, adding bilge water and corrosion risk
• Requires periodic adjustment and repacking
• Generates shaft wear over time due to friction

PSS shaft seal update and driveline inspections carried out on this beautiful 51’ Riviera during its recent yard period at The Boat Works Gold Coast ⚓️

Shaft seals are one of the most critical components in any vessel’s driveline, so ensuring these are kept in good condition ensures peace of mind on the water.

How’s your vessel’s stern gear looking? The best time to prepare for the season is before it starts!

For everyone watching along at home, here’s part 2 of a great video showcasing a recent refit at Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard with Mark Berg's Fishing Addiction. There’s a lot more that goes into a boat refit than meets the eye, so it’s fantastic to have such a wealth of knowledge on hand giving customers the ability to meet all their needs in one convenient location.
