🔎 Flashback - Thone River Bridge, NSW

A look back at our team in action using an under-bridge inspection unit at the Thone River Bridge on the eastern end of the Oxley Highway. 🌉

For 90 years, this bridge has played a vital role in keeping communities connected and freight moving. It received some well-deserved TLC as part of major maintenance works delivered by Transport for NSW.

Bridges like this are often taken for granted, but ongoing inspection, maintenance, and renewal are essential to ensuring their longevity and safety. We were proud to support the project that preserved and strengthened the infrastructure our regional communities rely on every day.

🚁 Drones in Consulting Engineering – Enhancing Inspections and Site Planning

Australia’s transport network spans over 900,000 km of roads and more than 50,000 bridges - assets that require ongoing inspection and maintenance to remain safe and reliable.

For asset owners and engineers, understanding how structures deteriorate over time is critical to making informed maintenance and investment decisions.

Traditionally, bridge inspections rely on under-bridge inspection units, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms - methods that are effective, but often require significant planning, traffic control, and time on site.

At BK., we use UAVs to complement these approaches and improve how we inspect and assess infrastructure. Drones allow us to:
• Conduct detailed visual inspections of hard-to-access areas—decking, superstructures, culverts—without the need for extensive access equipment
• Capture high-resolution imagery to identify defects, monitor condition, and support engineering assessments
• Undertake pre-project site reconnaissance, helping us understand constraints, site changes, and access requirements early
• Reduce time on site and minimise disruption, particularly where traffic management would otherwise be required

The result? Safer inspections, more efficient delivery, and better-informed decisions for asset management and design.

Construction has begun!

BK. Engineering Consulting Solutions was proud to deliver the civil and structural design for Narrabri Shire Council's Violet Street Bridge Upgrade.

The project involved replacing a 49-metre bridge, upgrading road approaches and providing new shared pathways, pedestrian refuges and street lighting to improve safety and connectivity for the community.

A key challenge was minimising flood impacts on the surrounding properties. Through innovative design solutions—including blade piers, a High Performance Redirective Kerb (HPRK), and a collapsible pedestrian barrier—our team significantly reduced potential flood impacts and maintenance requirements while maintaining code compliance and functionality.

This project highlights the value of collaboration between our civil and structural teams and the client to deliver practical, community-focused infrastructure solutions.

Having previously worked as a chef in fine dining in Sydney and Adelaide, she is looking forward to bringing her passion for excellence and her team-centric approach to BK.
