Great to see the Violet Street Bridge project in Narrabri taking shape!

BK. Engineering Consulting Solutions is proud to have delivered the detailed engineering design for this important infrastructure upgrade on behalf of Narrabri Shire Council.

A great example of our teams working together, with our Civil Structures team designing the bridge and our Civil Design team delivering the approach roads and shared paths.

Can't wait to see this one finished!

INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE

👷‍♂️ Progress continues on the new Violet Street Bridge, with a concrete pour completed last week on the bridge deck. (📸)
🚜 Works on Turrawan Road are underway.
🦺 Works on the Bayley Park Creek Causeway on Rangari Road are in progress.
💧 Maintenance and repairs to sewer mains between Namoi Creek and the Namoi River are continuing.
🧼 Graffiti removal at the old cemetery in Narrabri, cleaning of Wee Waa's C*D.
🌱 Mowing around the Shire - including Cooma Oval, Dangar Park and Gately Field in Narrabri, town streets in Boggabri and recreation parks in Wee Waa.
🛝Planting of trees and site clean-up at the Narrabri Tourism and Cultural Hub.
🪣 Cleaning of amenities in Boggabri, mowing of Jubilee Oval and preparations for cricket season.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝟏𝟏𝟖-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞-𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬.

BK. recently provided civil and structural design support for Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) on safety improvements beneath the historic Manilla Rail Viaduct in north-west NSW.

Constructed in 1908, the Manilla Rail Viaduct is the longest curved timber rail viaduct in NSW and was added to the State Heritage Register in 2023. The non-operational rail line has been closed since 1983, with the condition of the viaduct resulting in a number of road underpasses being closed or requiring temporary safety measures.

Our scope involved developing detailed design solutions across multiple sites, including:
🚧 Namoi Street – permanent vehicle closure beneath the viaduct, with a formalised pedestrian connection.
🚧 River Street – safety barriers to protect the viaduct piers while maintaining access for 26 m B-Doubles, including a constrained reverse-curve alignment.
🚧 Showground East – realignment of the access track to improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians while maintaining access for the showground users.
🚧 Bowman Street – safety barriers and road treatments to protect the viaduct piers while accommodating 19 m prime mover and semi-trailer movements.

One of the key challenges was balancing modern road safety requirements with the physical, spatial and heritage constraints of the existing structure and surrounding environment.

At River Street, for example, the design solution required an iterative approach for the selection of the safety barrier alignment, swept path analysis for B-Doubles and proximity of nearby mature trees to ensure the road and safety barrier geometry met Austroads and supplier requirements whilst maintaining sufficient clearance from the viaduct piers and trees to avoid conflict.

The project demonstrates the type of engineering challenges that come with working around existing infrastructure — where the best solution isn't always about designing something new, but about finding a practical way to make existing infrastructure safer, more accessible and fit for purpose.

Another project where engineering, safety, heritage and real-world constraints all had to work together.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 | 𝐆𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝, 𝐍𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧

Following significant damage during the 2022 Northern Rivers floods, BK. was engaged by Lismore City Council to undertake the detailed design for the remediation of approximately 1 kilometre of Gungas Road, north of Nimbin in the Lismore City Council LGA.

The site presented a range of engineering challenges, including shallow high-strength basalt bedrock, a fast-flowing creek system that regularly overtops its banks, large boulders that become mobilised during floods, flood afflux constraints, environmentally sensitive lowland rainforest vegetation and a highly constrained road corridor. The existing pavement condition also limited the suitability of conventional in-situ stabilisation techniques, requiring alternative rehabilitation solutions.

The key design treatments include:
🚧 4 cell box culvert across Mulgum creek, designed to enable a staged constructed, with cast in-situ columns to protect culvert legs from debris and boulder impact and to provide uplift restraint
🚧 InQuik IQ700 13.7m long single span bridge with integral abutments over Mulgum Creek
🚧 Rigid reinforced concrete pavement on the approaches to the creek crossings for improved durability
🚧 Two reinforced concrete causeways at secondary waterway crossings
🚧 Imported stabilised DGB20 gravel for pavement rehabilitation. This treatment was selected to allow the road to be trafficked sooner than alternative treatments.
🚧 Provision of passing bays at maximum 200 metre spacing to allow safe areas for vehicles to pass
🚧 Replacement of several transverse stormwater pipe to improve stormwater management during frequent events
🚧 Relocation of the existing HDPE raw watermain at four locations, including both creek crossings.

A great example of how BK. integrate civil and structural engineering to deliver more resilient infrastructure for regional communities.
