Hi

My apologies if you have had trouble contacting me personally over the past few months as my 32 year old back injury has had me "Out of Action" for most of that time and I am finally getting back to my normal routine.

I have started to work on the Classic Honda 50's Australia websites "Tech Info" page now that I can sit down for a decent amount of time and have added 14 new Shop Manuals that you can download for free including:

Unlock the Box: (50’s Brotherhood Issue: #30)

In this instalment of “Unlock the Box” we are looking at the parts that make up an 88cc top end performance kit. A well tuned and sorted 88cc engine can produce around 8 horsepower and will definitely transform your mini 50 from a tortoise into a hare.

Rather than trying to piece together a package that may or may not work to its full potential, purchasing a proven engine performance kit can save you a lot of time and money and ensure that you get the results that you are after; the first time.

The kit that we are looking at is the TB Parts Race Head, 88cc Big Bore and 20mm Carb Kit. Mike Heron from TB Parts has been a big part of the mini bike scene in the United States since the mid 90’s and has expanded internationally, supplying quality parts at affordable prices.

So how do you put together a winning combination?

Race Head: a race head is typically designed with larger inlet and exhaust ports, improved port and combustion chamber shape plus bigger valves to allow better airflow for increased performance.

Heavy duty valve springs are also required as part of the head package to keep the valve-train under control especially at high RPM where valve bounce can become a problem.

Camshaft: the camshaft controls when the inlet and exhaust valves open and close, how far the valves open and how long they open for. Performance cams allow more fuel into the cylinder and more exhaust gases out.

A race cam will have a much higher valve lift and longer duration than the standard cam with faster valve opening rates. Cam choice is very important and can make or break a motor.

Big Bore: the easiest way to increase the capacity and performance of your motor is to increase the size of the cylinder bore, as the old saying goes; there is no replacement for displacement.

The standard Honda 50 has a small 39mm bore when compared to the 88cc motors larger 52mm cylinder bore. Big bore kits for the 50’s can include 72cc, 85cc, 88cc, 95cc and 106cc.

High Compression Piston: the higher the compression ratio, the more mechanical energy an engine can squeeze from its air-fuel mixture. Increased compression will require the use of higher octane fuels and a colder spark plug to help prevent detonation and overheating.

The top of the high compression piston is domed and designed to suit the shape and size of the combustion chamber to help establish the required compression ratio and provide adequate piston to valve clearance.

Carburettor: a big carb will give you more mid-range to top-end at the cost of bottom end power and a smaller carb will start better, have better throttle response and generally work better in the low to mid-range.

The 20mm carb kit with performance intake manifold supplied with the TB Parts kit is pretty well spot on for the 88cc motor. It is very important to check the Fuel-Air mixture and get the jetting right, as a lean mixture can overheat your motor and cause premature engine failure.

Performance CDI: improves throttle response across the power range while at the same time eliminating the rev limiter found in the stock Honda CDI.

High Volume Oil Pump: if you are increasing power by around 300% it makes sense to increase oil flow as well. A high flow oil pump will help to keep your mini lubricated and running cool.

Performance Exhaust: to get the most from your 88cc performance engine run a quality free flowing exhaust system, if you run a standard exhaust with the 88cc kit you will risk overheating your motor and it will not reach its full potential.

A 20mm carb with a standard exhaust is like breathing in through a snorkel and out through a straw, you wouldn’t last long either.

Re-gearing: adjust the bikes gearing to suit the new motor so as to avoid continuous driving
under excessively heavy load especially during the running in period to avoid overheating.

Installation of an engine performance kit requires specialised tools and technical knowledge in regard to engine assembly; we recommend that a qualified mechanic familiar with your model bike installs the parts so as to ensure that the engine is correctly assembled and properly tuned.
