Victorian Precision Service Rifle - Series

Victorian Precision Service Rifle - Series Promote the "Precision Service Rifle"discipline and all things precision rifle related.

The Victorian Precision Service Rifle Series is an exciting teamed precision rifle match originating out of Canberra expanding to NSW and now Victoria. These matches offer competitors the chance to challenge themselves and their equipment through a variety of dynamic shooting conditions and positions. The emphasis is on marksmanship, practical precision and problem solving through a series of time

d applications under greater time pressure then usually found on a full bore range. Shot in 2 details consisting of shooting pairs, competitors work together to help each other out with wind calls, fall of shot, managing gear and any other problems that present themselves throughout the match, with teamwork being a key principle. There are some restrictions on equipment depending on the class you choose to shoot in. With the simple rule being that if you want to use it, you must carry it for the entire course of fire.

Improving you part 1

Knowing your equipment intimately and having a process that you adhere to enables consistency, review and efficiency gains. From macro to micro levels, a process leading up to a competition to pre-shot routine through to debrief/review and back to competition lead up, process helps free up bandwidth. Having time and space to think by off loading tasks enables you to focus on the "whats important now".

Future Posts will look at process for:
reloading
calibration
loading packs - for practice and competition
precomp routine - weather, equipment and clothing preparation
equipment layout - workspace and efficient management
tripod set up
sling set up
pre-shot routine
shot routine
post-shot routine
post comp routine
debriefing - notes
feedback loop into deliberate practice - core and improvements

Competitor of the month

Another Australian Team heading to Bisley, UK. I know his practice regimen has increase leading into the trip overseas.

Shooting experience
I began shooting purely for pest control. I had a rabbit and fox problem that needed fixing, so I got my license. I started with a .22, which was good fun, it taught the fundamentals and was cheap. I have probably put 10000 rounds through it and it was adequate for up close. But then I wondered: what about that fox on the other side of the paddock? How far could I really go?
A .223 was next for me and the rest is history. I joined the Castlemaine Rifle Club and my enjoyment of longer ranges was cemented. I have been there for nearly five years now and have enjoyed every visit.

Practice regime
I dry fire once a week usually in an uncomfortable position and spend a lot of time out the back on rabbits from a tripod

What drew you to psr
PSR is a great balance of time pressure and practicality. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and sticks to the fundamentals of shooting. Natural point of aim and knowing your wind. I liked the service aspect of it and the hunting applicability of the positions.

One piece of advice to someone starting out in PSR
It’s 95% how you point the rifle, not the rifle you are using.

Long range grouping

Out of interest I took the winning target from the ACT PSR NATO Class and ran a group analysis. Using the longest of the 3 ranges - 900m, 800m & 700m - it was ascertained the 27 round group was 0.504mil (1.70 MOA) with a median radius of 0.127mil (0.428MOA).

Over 6 serials, 5 different positions and snap as well as rapid exposures that gives you an idea of the system accuracy required.
