I've been asked a couple of times now about tips regarding edging, and what type of equipment to use.

I found this article which explains it pretty well.

Happy to answer any questions it might generate. πŸ™‚

Which of these edgers is for you? Six words deflated me like a bindii in a bike tyre: β€˜why don’t you do the edges?’ My lawn was looking terrific, but my edges were as fuzzy as riding in the rain wearing glasses. I can’t recall my answer to the question, but a star-wheeled edger soon […]

Just a quick tip for those of you who aren't sure why their lawn is dying or has patches.

I've had quite a few customers with lawn grub in their lawns lately.

The signs are patches of dead grass in otherwise healthy lawns that appear to be growing in size. Sometimes you can see little chomp marks in the blades of the grass as well, which is a sure sign. Also lots of white or grey moths flying around the lawn.

A quick test is to put a wet towel, folded in half to make it square, and leave it on your lawn overnight. Make sure you put the towel over the green grass next to the dead patch, which is where the grubs will likely be active.

Check under the towel the next morning to see if there are any grubs on the grass underneath.

If you do, get a lawn grub treatment and apply in accordance with the instructions.

These grubs can destroy a whole lawn almost overnight so early detection is crucial.

Happy gardening!

For those home gardeners that are getting out and enjoying working in the garden and improving your lawn.......

Just a word of caution.

Make sure when you use chemicals such as fertiliser and w**ding products, you read the label carefully.

Unfortunately, it's not always obvious to everyone, W**d Killer usually means it kills w**ds. Sure, BUT it will also kill most other plants including your grass. It's basically the same as Roundup.

You need to use a selective herbicide that doesn't kill the grass that surrounds the w**ds.

So please read the label or this might happen to your lawn. This was a near perfect lawn after top dressing and the owner used "W**d Killer" to kill a few w**ds in his lawn. 😒

You might recall me mentioning wetting agents a while ago just as water restrictions were coming in.

The wetting agent is used to prevent soil from being hydrophobic, or in other words, won't absorb water.

Well when mentioning this to my customers, I'm always met with mixed responses. Let's just say I have my share of "non believers". 😁

That said, I have always tried to provide evidence to back up my advice, which is usually digging up some soil to see how far the water is penetrating after watering. However, some people still aren't convinced.

Well here is the evidence I have been waiting for.

Consider this........ I have measured 249.1mm from Thursday afternoon until last night (Monday night) which is 10 inches of rain, and I decided to improve the drainage from the driveway to deflect run-off better. So I used a shovel to dig away some of the soil and this is what I found.

10 inches of rain, and a collection point for run-off and the water only pe*****ted just over an inch in some of the soil.

The attached photos were taken minutes after the storm came through and the road was still wet.

Seeing is believing. πŸ˜‰

Some more information and tips on how to keep your lawn alive during the hot summer months.

I like to water my lawn of an evening to allow more time for the water to pe*****te the soil before it evaporates.

I have been recommending people use wetting agents during summer to get better effect from the water they use.

Here's why.

Wetting agents come in liquid or granular form and are sometimes mixed into lawn foods and top-dressing mixes that reduce the surface tension of the water

Many people often ask me whether it's better to catch or mulch grass clippings?

I always recommend mulching if you have a relatively w**d free lawn and mow regularly. This improves the soil, and also reduces soil temperature and water evaporation, giving it better resilience to the summer heat.

This explains it a bit further.

It's ok to leave clippings on the lawn occasionally, as they are a great source of nitrogen and can act as a natural fertiliser. Should you mulch or catch?
