๐ด๐ Introducing the 'Kula House' by Thirkell Consulting Engineers and Building Design! ๐บโจ
๐ข Calling all tropical living enthusiasts! We are thrilled to showcase one of our latest project, a stunning new family home that combines affordability, sustainability, and modern design in perfect harmony. ๐ก๐
๐ฅ Client Relations: Our client, a licensed builder, presented us with floor plans and front elevations, and together we brought their vision to life. The 'Kula House' showcases our expertise in blending structural elements seamlessly into the design, optimising space, and creating a home that's both functional and beautiful. ๐๐ก
๐ฟ Sustainable Living: We are proud to have collaborated with our client, who is an HIA Greensmart professional, to incorporate eco-friendly features throughout the house. The lightweight design boasts excellent cross ventilation, insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and a wide range of sustainable finishing materials. ๐ฑ๐ก
๐ก Design Philosophy: Inspired by the traditional 'long house' style found in Pacific islands and South East Asia, the 'Kula House' pays homage to cultural heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics. The low-set design boasts a simple structural approach, with the main focus on the innovative double skillion roof system. The spacious interior is bathed in natural light and refreshing breezes, eliminating the need for air-conditioning. โ๏ธ๐จ
๐ฌ๏ธ Embracing the Elements: We believe in designing homes that work harmoniously with the environment. The 'Kula House' features extensive 900mm roof eaves, protecting the walls from the tropical sun. Raised above sand fly level, the house allows for optimal airflow, reducing the risk of flood damage and capturing cool breezes. The rear deck, designed for year-round living, welcomes refreshing sea breezes and northeasterly monsoon winds. ๐๐
๐ก A Healthy Home: Our sustainable building principles extend to the interior design. With a smart layout, the 180 square meter 'Kula House' offers four double-sized bedrooms, a master suite with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, a spacious main bathroom, a dedicated kids' play area, a study room, and ample storage. The high raked ceilings create a sense of spaciousness, while the central hallway and open breezeway promote natural ventilation. ๐๐ฌ๏ธ
๐ Thinking Green: The 'Kula House' goes beyond aesthetics, considering its environmental impact. We carefully selected building materials that contribute to sustainability, from the light-colored colorbond steel roof with reflective thermal insulation to the low VOC water-based coatings on the yellow stringybark timber floorboards. Energy-efficient lighting, water-saving fittings, and plans for solar panels, water tanks, and a greywater system further enhance the eco-friendliness of this home. โป๏ธ๐ฟ
๐ฎ Valuable and Relevant: The 'Kula House' is more than just a home; it's an investment in the future. Drawing inspiration from the cultural significance of 'Kula' shells, which hold value in the PNG Trobriand Islands, this design aims to capture hearts and minds. By incorporating timeless Pacific island design principles, we ensure that this house remains valuable and relevant for generations to come. ๐๏ธ๐
