Back in the day, TJM Products were a major sponsor of the annual Straddie Fishing Classic. The event was held for 9 days in August each year, over the week of the Ekka. Lloyd, Marg and John O. made visits at different times, to support the Classic.

Mazda Australia gave away a Mazda 4x4 ute each year, and many other sponsors joined forces to make the Classic a huge event, attracting people from all over the country.

The entrants would go out fishing each day and return to the main area at the Point Lookout Hotel for official weigh in around 4pm, followed by entertainment late into the night. There was a display area near the main stage where sponsors had various displays set up and TJM Products had a display there. A surprising addition to the display occurred one morning when opening up, a young couple decided that the ute liner display was a great place to sleep for the night!

Activities were also organised at various beaches with the Mazda lunchtime BBQ trailer being a big hit. TJM put on beach recovery demonstrations at various locations. One day there was a real live recovery demonstration of a 40 Series, complete with boat and trailer that was about to be swamped by the incoming tide. The TJM Products Mazda was on hand, complete with a Mazda Aust representative riding inside and plenty of people watching from the beach. Much to the amazement of many, the TJM Mazda extracted the 4x4 and boat from the water and up to a safe place on the beach. Unfortunately in the heat of the recovery no photos were taken.

We thank Paul C for the words and the photos. 👍

The Red Roo sales program ran for many years, targeting passenger cars , mainly in rural areas in smaller country towns and Distributor areas in regional areas. The concept was to offer protection to passenger cars against animal strikes.

Red Roo had its own sales brochures, stickers and display stands, which were supplied to country service stations, parts stores and country Distributors. Red Roo was also promoted to Government Departments for fitment to their vehicles in rural areas.

(A massive thank you to Paul C who wrote the overview above and supplied the photos. )

⭐️A look back at the 14th edition of the catalogue.

At first glance, there are only subtle differences between the 13th and 14th editions. But look a little closer, particularly at the fitment charts, and you can see how much things were changing.

As vehicle technology and models continued to develop, so too did the range of products available to suit them. Enjoy the browse!

A huge thank you to Paul who has shared these photos and words. He’ll be sending through some more including the display trailer and how it came into existence, so keep an eye out for those.

“In the 90’s there was extensive Distributor support at 4X4 and Ag shows. The larger 4X4 shows in capital cities were supported by Head Office staff and usually a 20 ft container of display material. They usually took a couple of days to set up, and a day to pack up after the show, then the container would be shipped back to HO.

The regional 4X4 and Agricultural shows shows were supported by the TJM Display Trailer, towed to site by which ever vehicle was selected to promote new products. “

The following photos are from the Perth 4X4 Show, 11/98:

“The Show container was sent across for this show, complete with the new wall mural. After the show there was a spare pack up day, so what better way to spend it than flying out to Rottness and a circuit of the WACA and the city at 900 ft- permission granted by air traffic control and more than likely not possible these days. “

Nearly 5,000 km travelled in 13 days, taking us from Brisbane to St George, Thargomindah, Innamincka, and Birdsville. Along the way we experienced plenty of red dirt, water, and some incredible outback scenery.

Heavy rain closed 3 of the 4 roads out of Birdsville, so our journey home took an unexpected turn, adding an extra 500km as we detoured via Longreach.

Wherever we went, the locals were incredibly welcoming, always happy to share a story, offer advice, or lend a hand. Their friendliness made the trip even more memorable.

Not quite the trip we planned, but definitely one we'll never forget. The Australian outback always keeps you on your toes and that's all part of the adventure! Where are you hoping to travel to next?

Here’s some of the pages from the 13th catalogue produced in 1993. The style has had a ‘glow up’ from previous versions and an extra 3 branches had been established around Australia. Towards the end you’ll spy the vehicle affectionately known as ‘pink bits’.

The 12th edition of the catalogue, produced around 1992, reflected the steady growth of equipment to support an ever-expanding range of vehicles. During this time, a number of branches were also established, marking an important period of growth and development for the business.
