🌱 From paddock to product in around 100 days

HB HulkBoards are made using industrial h**p — a rapidly renewable crop that grows to harvest in just a few months while naturally capturing carbon from the atmosphere. After harvest, the h**p fibre is processed and engineered into high-performance composite boards manufactured in Townsville, Australia.

By replacing traditional wood fibres with regeneratively grown Australian h**p, HulkBoards help reduce reliance on timber resources while supporting a new generation of bio-based manufacturing materials.

When a table becomes our table.

This custom tabletop was commissioned by Ardo Hotel Townsville, a five-star luxury resort, for their Japanese restaurant Terasu.

Crafted from 32mm HulkBuild HulkBoard (HB), the table showcases how regenerative materials can be used in premium hospitality environments without compromising on quality, durability, or design.

What makes this project even more special is that the panel was manufactured locally in our factory right here in Townsville, using Australian-grown h**p fibre. The result is a high-performance substrate engineered to work just like conventional boards in joinery and furniture applications — while supporting the shift toward more sustainable material systems.

Seeing our material integrated into a luxury venue like Terasu is something we’re incredibly proud of.

And it definitely gives new meaning to the question…

“Can we sit at our table tonight?”

“Can HulkBuild boards be painted?”
“What if I want a different finish to the natural h**p tone?”

We’re asked these questions regularly — so we decided to demonstrate the process clearly.

In this latest video, a door made from our 40mm HulkPlus2 (H2) board is prepared and painted using entirely standard workshop methods.

Surface joins and minor imperfections are filled.
The door is sanded using 120-grit paper.
An undercoat is applied.
A light secondary sand is completed.
Then the final topcoat is applied.

No specialised primers.
No unusual preparation.
No modified process.

Just conventional painting practice — exactly as you would apply to MDF or other common sheet materials.

The result shows that HulkBuild boards integrate seamlessly into established finishing workflows. While many projects embrace the natural h**p aesthetic, painting provides complete design flexibility without compromising material performance.

For cabinet makers, builders, designers and specifiers, this means you can adopt a bio-based substrate and still achieve the finish your project requires.

This benchtop was built on our 32mm HulkBoard substrate — engineered for strength, stability and zero compromise performance.

Finished in a stunning Iridescent Ebony veneer, the surface was applied using standard wood glue — no substrate prep required. Just clean application, clamp, cure and go. That’s the advantage of working with a dimensionally stable, moisture-resistant core.

The veneer flows seamlessly using a waterfall technique, wrapping from the top surface down over the edges in one continuous piece. Even the edges are fully dressed — no joins, no shortcuts.

A thin epoxy layer completes the finish, creating a deep, glass-like surface that amplifies the richness of the grain. The reflection is vivid and mirror-smooth, giving the benchtop a bold, high-end presence. Light plays across the surface, enhancing the natural movement of the veneer and delivering that unmistakable luxury aesthetic — sharp, clean, and unmistakably premium.
