International Women's Day was more like a week this year for the ACS Engineers team! We celebrated with the and at their IWD breakfasts. We squeezed in some work along the way reaching milestones on a number of our local projects. Most importantly though we celebrate the great women in our team that on a daily basis, not just for ACS Engineers and our clients, but for their families and community.

Meet the ACS Engineers Team

Malinda Sellars - Designer/Drafter
Diploma – Engineers Studies (Civil)

Growing up in the Scenic Rim, Malinda entered her drafting career as part of a traineeship once completing high school at Boonah State High School. She continued to work for Scenic Rim Regional Council while advancing her studies within the engineering sector via distance education through the University of Southern Queensland. Malinda worked for SRRC for 15 years within the Infrastructure Services and Works Departments.

Since joining ACS Engineers in 2021 has continued to grow her design and drafting skills using a variety of CAD packages including Civil 3D and Civil Site Design on projects for roadworks, water and sewer reticulation, stormwater drainage, bulk earthworks, footpaths and bill of quantities take off.

Malinda currently works part time with ACS Engineers whilst raising her two children in the Scenic Rim. Malinda is focused on delivering professional engineering designs tailored to suit her client's and the community's needs.

Meet the ACS Engineers Team

Sara Sutherland – Civil Engineer
BEng (Civil – Structural Major)

Born and bred in the Scenic Rim, Sara completed high school in Ipswich, where her interest in mathematics and physics grew, before pursing her career in Civil Engineering. Sara graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) in 2017 and has worked on largescale construction projects, private and Local Government projects. These projects have provided Sara with a broad range of experiences, from Statutory Body applications to onsite inspections and quality control. Each role has been underpinned by communication and management of time, budgets and stakeholders. Sara’s role within ACS Engineers as a Civil Engineer extends to project and contract management, utilising skills such as budgeting, planning and stakeholder management. You will also find Sara regularly on site applying her critical eye to construction progress to ensure compliance with design.

Sara currently works part time with ACS Engineers whilst raising her two children in the Scenic Rim. Sara is always developing her engineering skills and delivering professional engineering and tailored-made solutions that suit her client's needs.

Sarrah Free – Civil and Environmental Engineer
BEng (Civil – Environmental Major) (Hons – Class 2A)

Since relocating to the region in 2001, Sarrah has been an active member of the community, particularly within the equine industry. She completed her secondary education at The Kooralbyn International School, where she developed a strong interest in mathematics and soil science.

Sarrah’s thesis, undertaken in collaboration with Scenic Rim Regional Council, secured her a graduate position in the development planning department of another Local Government Area. In this role, she was responsible for the critical assessment of large-scale developments with complex site constraints.

With a passion for floodplain, stormwater and environmental management and agricultural engineering solutions, Sarrah continues to expand her technical capabilities to deliver practical, results-driven outcomes for clients.

Sarrah enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary team and strives to provide quality advice and assessment to ensure good outcomes for all stakeholders. Sarrah possesses the necessary qualifications, experience, and knowledge to excel and is a valuable member of the ACS team. She currently works part-time with ACS Engineers while raising her two young sons in the Scenic Rim.

Jonathan Oppermann
Civil Engineer - BEng (Mechatronics)

Jonathan is a highly skilled Project Engineer with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics from the University of Queensland. With over a decade of experience managing large-scale electrical and infrastructure projects in mining, oil & gas, and rail sectors, Jonathan has led teams through construction, commissioning, and handover phases, ensuring compliance with safety standards and technical specifications. Having grown up in the Scenic Rim, Jonathan has returned to the area to apply his extensive experience to support community growth and development and to pursue a career in Civil Engineering.

Jonathan has quickly developed valuable skills in flood impact assessment, road and property access design and construction supervision and inspections for a diverse range of clients. Together with his strong project management skills your project is in safe hands with Jonathan on the team.

Susan Shay
Director/Principal Civil and Environmental Engineer - BEng (Civil – Environmental Major) (2nd Class Hon), RPEQ

Beaudesert-born Susan is ACS Engineer’s Principal Civil and Environmental Engineer. Susan’s key skills focus on civil and environmental design and assessment, environmental compliance and project management. Susan has over 25 years experience in the civil and environmental consultancy industry and as a Register Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) provides her clients with quality solutions and trusted advice.

Susan is experienced in development feasibility assessments, the management and supervision of engineering construction projects, stormwater quality and quantity assessment, design and management including Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), flood impact assessments, water supply and sewerage design for agricultural, residential, commercial and industrial development projects.

Susan prides herself on delivering proactive and practical solutions satisfying the requirements of her clients, statutory authorities and local communities. Susan is mindful of her client’s, the community’s and the environment’s needs and values the knowledge that stakeholders bring to a project. Susan is committed to building solid and trusting relationships with her clients and industry partners and guiding them through their development journey with superior communication.
