As a leading independent law firm, with more than 150 partners and a string of legal awards under its belt, Hall & Wilcox’s purpose is to enable its clients, people and communities to thrive.
It is therefore no surprise that the design brief for their front of house stair at their Melbourne office reflects the firm’s culture of connection, collaboration and creating value for clients. The firm wanted a staircase that was both beautiful and functional.
As visitors enter the office foyer, they are greeted by a warm and inviting space, with the stair located at one end and defined by a glass balustrade. From the foyer, the stair descends three levels, revealing the design intent when viewed from above. The steel structure is clearly expressed, with a central divider aligned to the main stair for seamless flow and consistent shadowlines that highlight the solid timber thickness. Internal linings and perforated plasterboard soften the steel visually while also improving acoustics.
The outcome is a stair that balances structure, materiality, and purpose, aligning seamlessly with the identity of Hall & Wilcox.

We are proud of this one.

At NHP’s Melbourne head office, the architectural intent centered on achieving a precise geometric flow between the first and second level. This custom stair and void interface required rigorous coordination between digital modelling and onsite ex*****on to deliver a perfectly linear, flat-plate steel balustrade.
The ex*****on focused on the continuity of form: invisible joints and flawless alignment transition from the stair pitch through to the horizontal void run. At the base, a bespoke structural performance solution was required to seamlessly integrate the first several treads with the surrounding joinery, resolving a complex interface where steel meets timber.
To achieve a premium aesthetic within project parameters, a specialised metallic paint system was utilised to replicate the tonal depth of stainless steel. The result is a striking sculptural element that balances high-end visual impact with construction efficiency.

A leading global law firm recently unveiled a new Melbourne office fit-out. Architects, inspired by exceptional service, wove a bold vision into the design, crafting a space where clients feel expertise and calm focus. More than a link, the stair’s clean lines and fine materials - a tectonic hint of clarity - reflect a commitment to quality, enhancing the experience for those shaping complex outcomes.

GPT Space&Co’s latest fit-out at 181 William Street is nestled in the very core of Melbourne’s prestigious legal and financial district, a location that many covet. Boasting a WiredScore Platinum rating for its unparalleled wired infrastructure, this building not only meets but exceeds the highest standards, demanding a uniquely crafted architectural space and staircase.
The landings and nosings, carved from Toledo Marble Stone, ground the design in both beauty and practicality. Rising from this foundation, the balustrades are cladded on both sides with Tasmanian Oak veneer, crowned with a solid European Beech capping. The handrails, also Tasmanian Oak, are stained in a rich 'Japanese Maple' hue, their downturn corners meticulously wrapped in hand-stitched Casablanca espresso vintage lux leather.
Unique details include cladding inserts made from solid timber discs paired with Homapal brushed aluminium accents, subtle LED lighting casting a warm glow, and mirror cladding on the adjacent liftwell that amplifies the space with a sleek, reflective twist. Together, these elements create a striking harmony of textures and tones, blending muted sophistication with bold craftsmanship—offering guests a seamless ascent through a professional workplace that inspires connection and productivity.

"Nothing is as it appears, but everything as it should be" could easily describe this distinguished fit-out for Gray Puksand's new Melbourne office.

Central to their office is a quiet and inviting monolithic structure that invokes the user's curiosity to follow the ribbon-like pathway carved into it and ascend, viewing interesting angles of the office below and above, including the perforated mirror ceiling that reflects the occupant’s path in a wave-like ripple effect.

And, there is more. Below, nestled into the stair's footprint, there is a gathering area for lockers and a footwear changing zone. On the rear side, an intimate auditorium is seamlessly integrated, while to the other side, a kitchen is cleverly recessed.

The closer you get, the more you perceive and appreciate the architects' focus, from circulation and functionality to the interplay of light, colour, and tactile experiences.

Thanks, Gray Puksand. We loved this one.

When sustainability meets clever design, the result is the recent office fit-out for a top-tier corporate firm in Melbourne, designed by Hassell.

What makes this project stand out isn’t just its visual impact—it’s the thoughtful integration of sustainability. The client sought to reuse materials from their previous fit-out, aligning with their commitment to reducing waste and embracing sustainable practices.

Hassell skillfully translated this vision into a cohesive design that merges sustainability with functionality. Fabcon contributed to this effort by providing the architectural stair, a central piece that embodies the vision of reusing materials, including the wood panelling.

This project highlights the potential for sustainability and design to work in harmony, creating spaces that are both innovative and responsible.

When looking at the new stair for GPT Space & Co, many design cues come to mind. Officially, the designers envisioned a staircase that mimics the elegance of a grand piano. For us, the result also evokes the luxury interior of a high-end private jet, combining functionality with a touch of opulence.
Holding the visual identity together like that of the black keys of a piano, a black finish runs seamlessly along the external and top sides of the stair and void balustrade, creating a striking ribbon effect, finished at either end with leather-wrapped handrails. This finish also extends to the stair soffit, adding to the cohesive and sophisticated look. Complementing the bold black finish, a few muted tones are incorporated into the design, enhancing the overall aesthetic and adding a subtle elegance.
We want to thank BVN Architecture and Renascent for collaborating on a very special fit-out.
