POINTS MAG MAY
Don’t give up on points magnetos.
Vertex and FIE magnetos are ideal for Hot Rods and all but the highest powered race engines.
They start engines far easier than electronic magnetos (like MSD Pro Mags) and cost a fraction of the price.

Here at Amped Magnetos we rebuild worn out magnetos of all kinds and all points mags can be restored to better than new condition. Several enhancements have been made over recent years for FIE Sprint Mags, Supermags and the Vertex based family of magnetos to improve their performance and reliability.

Over the past year I have been asked if I can upgrade the Promag 44 to deliver more amps on several occasions. The answer is yes – I have the big 56 amp magnet wheels in stock. However, I always explain that experience has shown that the MSD points boxes will almost always expire in quick time if the magneto is set up to shove the full 56 amps through its circuitry. The only way to save the points box from premature death is to open up the clearances of the big magnet wheels so that the effective output of the magneto is 49 – 50 amps, and even then it is pushing the limits.

The 56 amp magnet wheels are pretty expensive and a conversion runs about at about AUD $1500 for the upgrade. That’s a lot of dollars for a 10% increase in mag firepower that also puts the points box into a minefield.

My advice is to spend less money on an FIE transformer that will produce the same 10% increase in spark energy WITHOUT overloading the points box. Practically and financially this is a better solution.
