Friends of the Pledger Wetlands

Friends of the Pledger Wetlands Friends of the Pledger Wetlands are a dedicated group of volunteers working to maintain and improve the environment of the Pledger Wetlands at Mawson Lakes

Friends of the Pledger Wetlands
When
The Friends of the Pledger Wetlands officially came into being in November 2013 when the active members of Mawson Lakes Environment Watch decided that the group should take on the new title. The title now reflects what had been the main focus of the group in recent years. Mawson Lakes Environment Watch was first formed as a community volunteer group in 2007. Wh

The Pledger Wetlands are in Mawson Lakes starting on the southern boundary of the suburb at the end of Egret Street. The area follows the boundary in a north westerly direction for about 600 metres until it reaches the railway when it turns at 90 degrees to follow the direction of the Gawler rail line until it meets Dry Creek close to the Mawson Lakes Transport Interchange. The Pledger Wetlands cover an area of approximately 10.2 hectares and stretch for about 2 kilometres. Who
Friends of the Pledger Wetlands are all volunteers and most (but not all) reside in Mawson Lakes. The Group is recognised and supported as ‘Community Volunteers’ by the City of Salisbury and Natural Resources - Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges. How
Back in 2007 what was then the Railway Wetlands was a sparsely vegetated area with an abundance of weed cover and the walking trail was often impassable because of mud which had washed down the bank. The contractors undertaking landscape maintenance for the City of Salisbury seemed to have abandoned the area. However, it was clear that the area had great potential to provide enjoyment for walkers and cyclists using the trail along its length and for wildlife to thrive in a biodiversity corridor. After consultation with Brian Pledger, the City of Salisbury Biodiversity Officer, it was agreed that Mawson Lakes Environment Watch could take on responsibility for redevelopment of the area. The City of Salisbury provided plants, equipment and supplies etc. and undertakes tasks such as track maintenance on request. Name
As mentioned above Brian Pledger was instrumental in facilitating the development of Mawson Lakes Environment Watch. Brian was tragically killed in June 2012 in a road accident whilst walking his dogs near his home in Lyndoch. Many of us in Mawson Lakes Environment Watch knew Brian personally and all knew of the contribution he made to the success of the group. We were shocked and deeply saddened by his passing. We were therefore pleased that the City of Salisbury agreed to the renaming of the Railway Wetlands to become the Pledger Wetlands in his memory. We intend to carry on the work that we know Brian would have enthusiastically supported.

Yesterday the weather gods smiled on us and the rain stayed away. We did a great job at pruning the overhang on the track and enjoyed a delicious morning tea afterwards.
Thanks to everyone who came out.
If anyone is out walking and come across a pair of ladies sunglasses let us know 😀

Thanks to everyone that came out yesterday, it was a gorgeous morning. We worked hard and nearly cleared the mulch pile. The little birds love to jump around to find the bugs in the newly spread mulch. Next session will be 19th April at 9:30am. Look forward to seeing you for more of the same great work.

🎄 Merry Christmas from Friends of Pledger! 🎄

Friends of Pledger would like to wish all our members and followers a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

This year we are especially grateful to Salisbury Council, Green Adelaide, Bupa, and Landcare for their valued support, including the provision of irrigation supplies. Thanks to this support — and many hours of hard work by our dedicated members — we now have automated irrigation on the upper side of the track. Hand watering is now only required on the lower section between the track and the water.

Over the past calendar year, the Friends of Pledger group has contributed over 700 volunteer hours, through end-of-month activity sessions, irrigation work, and hand watering.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year — we look forward to continuing the work together in the year ahead 🌱✨

We will recommence end of month activity sessions on 22nd February 2026

Sunday's event only had a small number of helpers that did a great job to clear the mulch pile between the showers. The photos are not a true reflection of weather.
BIG THANK YOU to those who have walked the track this week and w**ded. We picked up a number of piles this morning, it's really appreciated.

🌍 Ever Wanted to Help the Environment, But Can't Spare the Time? 🌱
I totally get it — life is busy! But if you've ever wanted to make a difference for the planet but don’t have hours to dedicate, here’s a quick way to chip in: help with w**ding! 🌿
It might sound simple, but removing invasive w**ds helps local plants thrive, supports wildlife, and improves our green spaces — all in a short amount of time! ⏳
If you're pressed for time but still want to make an impact, here’s a super easy way to help: while you're out for a walk along the Pledger Wetlands track, spend just a minute pulling some w**ds. 🌿 Simply leave them trackside, and we’ll come by to collect them! 🧹
Small acts like this really do add up. Let's work together to keep our environment healthy — and make a difference, one w**d at a time! 🙌

Did you know the Pledger Wetlands area is hand watered weekly over summer by a few dedicated volunteers.
A couple of these wonderful people have retired this year so we have vacancies for anyone who would like to spend a couple of hours a week holding a hose to keep our new plantings alive.
Send me a message for further details.
