šŸ“£ Collaboration Announcement!! šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗ

Recently I shared a post about a stylishly crafted meter cluster surround I had scanned and was exploring replicating to supply to enthusiasts. At the time, I believed it was an older piece and wasnā€™t aware of its origin, whether it was still being produced, or who the original designer was. That post received both support and challenge, and I appreciated both.

With help from the community the original designer, Hisashi Nakade of Japan was identified and I was able to connect directly with him. His handmade fibreglass versions are elegant and crafted with skill and care.

After some great conversations, Iā€™m really pleased to share with the Mazda community that Hisashi and I will be working together collaboratively under a formal agreement to make his design more accessible to a wider group of enthusiasts around the globe.

In addition to his fibreglass versions, weā€™ll be working together to develop both RHD and LHD versions using 3D printing to support broader global availability, with manufacturing based in Adelaide, South Australia.

Thereā€™s still a fair bit of work ahead in modelling, prototyping and refinementā€” but itā€™s an exciting step forward and Iā€™m looking forward to working with Hisashi and sharing progress as it develops alongside my other projects.

Something ducty..

Some of my Mazda NA miata mx5 3.0ā€ GV front lip brake ducts heading off stateside today.

These are made from ASA, holes are removed from the mount flanges to allow people to match them to their installs. Thereā€™s also a cleat on the top to enable a stay to be installed to help support them and resist hose loads.

I also make these in 2.5ā€

* update - For anyone keen to understand the history behind this design Iā€™ve been informed this may likely be a pod made by a gentleman called Hisashi Nakade - kudos to him for such a funky design thatā€™s still turning heads today - Be sure to look him up if you want to seek out an original.

For people curious this is a little comparison of PETG vs ASA in Australia on a 36degC day.

All materials have their place but when looking at exterior parts always consider the use case.

This was a warm day in Australia and I left two old failed prints in the sun to explore their performance in a simple experiment.

This particular PETG has 64-74degC softening/ glass transition temperature.

Vs the 100-105degC for ASA.

The white transmitter on the ground registering 54degc, but Iā€™m sure with an infrared temperature scanner the surface temp would be considerably higher.

I now focus using PETG for prototyping mostly and some out of direct sun components and ASA for final products that are directly exposed to sun, although there is an increased cost and time penalty printing ASA versus PETG.

There are some PETG alternatives that have slightly higher glass transition temps but theyā€™re still a good margin below the ASA alternatives on average in with my research.

I hope this might help some people make their material selections.

Something carbon likeā€¦

I just recently I completed an FD RX7 customised air intake elbow for a client.

From scan, to model to end product.
This turned out nicely.

I chose a PA6-CF filament for heat tolerance with a heat deflection temperature of 209degC after the annealing process itā€™ll do its duty well

Please donā€™t buy the cheap PLA eBay specials theyā€™ll melt on a winters day here in Australia!

These are made of a quality outdoor /UV rated plastic and are functional vents.

No theyā€™re not Xmas lights šŸ˜‚

Scanning, I love how YouTube videos make it seem so easyā€¦ and it is for small objects, full cars however take a bit of effort, scan planning and technique.

The reality is it takes time and in this example I have 1300 tracking dots on this miata and had about 10 goes at it to get it right, it doesnā€™t happen first time , nor look perfect first time like so many portrayā€¦

It can be very tricky to have the scanner align so many points in 3 dimensional space when you donā€™t have a crazy expensive tracking set up.
Itā€™s also going to take a lot of time to pull these off šŸ˜‚

So why do this?
I wasnā€™t able to find a scan online of the parts I wanted and Iā€™ve found previously when buying files that they arenā€™t always symmetrical or have glitches so I like to do my own work, ensure I have the dataset Iā€™m interested in which gives confidence in my design outcomes.

All in all Iā€™m very happy with the result so far and should give me a sound base for many of my projects I have in mine for this platform.

Time to pull the front bumper off and scan the inner structurešŸ¤Ÿ
