Something carbon like…

I just recently I completed an FD RX7 customised air intake elbow for a client.

From scan, to model to end product.
This turned out nicely.

I chose a PA6-CF filament for heat tolerance with a heat deflection temperature of 209degC after the annealing process it’ll do its duty well

👍

Another set of 3DRX 2010 Holden / Pontiac GTO bonnet style vents heading out the door for a hand delivery in the Adelaide Hills

Please don’t buy the cheap PLA eBay specials they’ll melt on a winters day here in Australia!

These are made of a quality outdoor /UV rated plastic and are functional vents.

Happy sunday!

Recently I’ve been helping remake up some NB miata mx5 Jet stream eyelids.
Having them posted to me i scanned, remodeled and printed them.
Just need to do a test fit now 🤟

this NB miata mx5 blank fascia panel with carbon effect has turned out mint 👌

No they’re not Xmas lights 😂

Scanning, I love how YouTube videos make it seem so easy… and it is for small objects, full cars however take a bit of effort, scan planning and technique.

The reality is it takes time and in this example I have 1300 tracking dots on this miata and had about 10 goes at it to get it right, it doesn’t happen first time , nor look perfect first time like so many portray…

It can be very tricky to have the scanner align so many points in 3 dimensional space when you don’t have a crazy expensive tracking set up.
It’s also going to take a lot of time to pull these off 😂

So why do this?
I wasn’t able to find a scan online of the parts I wanted and I’ve found previously when buying files that they aren’t always symmetrical or have glitches so I like to do my own work, ensure I have the dataset I’m interested in which gives confidence in my design outcomes.

All in all I’m very happy with the result so far and should give me a sound base for many of my projects I have in mine for this platform.

Time to pull the front bumper off and scan the inner structure🤟

The NBatty console.. perfect prototype fitment👌

Always great when the first quick prototype test print fits just right.

Now it’s time embed/customise the fitment of a Haltech 4x2 keypad.

Going to be a super clean addition to Dave’s mint red rocket 🚀

Stay tuned for the final edition 🤟

Something Seveney, Finally I’m getting around to completing the first steps of an NC FD rear hatchback…. The FD scan ✅

I’ve always loved my FDs rear hatch lines and always wondering how it might scale to suit the NC… so what better way to envisage it by merging the two?

Next up, scan the NC completely so I can trust the data I collect. Then I’ll merge the scans to see if I like the look before embarking on the modelling journey.

Quite a process, lots of hours but that’s how you end up getting it out of your brain into reality 🤟

Some may ask why bother.. and I don’t have an answer for you, other than why not?! 😂

*tape on the glass is so I didn’t need to dust the whole car to scan the glass contours

Targa print and assembly complete. ✅

Over 34 main parts. Printed out of ASA. Dowelled joints. Hot staples. Heatset threads. Slurry glue. Solder flushed joints.

Not a small print or assembly task by any stretch of the imagination and will still require some sanding and finishing, seals, hard mounts and rubber seals and a window.

Many of these projects are simply a cool factor thing to me and I testing the bounds of 3D printed components.

All said and done final top weighs around 7kg.

For those interested this is the “Fez Creations” targa from Cults, however I modified the file to strengthen some area and add in additional mounting points.

I can’t wait to see this thing completed by the owner it’s going to look awesome - Keep printing people! 🤟

(For the keen eyes amongst you, the top is just sitting on the car, not bolted on at this stage)

My NC “Mazonda” front end bumper is edging closer to design reality, the modelling is slowly developing.

Not completely done but once I’m happy with the look I’ll remove the front bar from the car and scan all the mounting points to make sure it fits nicely. 👌

I like Big prints and I can not lie, no other diy printer can deny… They take time.. they take patience to print and assemble but are worth it! 🤟

I had someone local ask me to print an online available targa top - the file was ok but I made a number of critical mods to the design to improve its mounting and im quite happy with the result so far.

One thing I’ve learnt over time is that assembling on the floor far from guarantees a good fitment.
So there are some sacrifices to be me made when seeking a glued solution and a fitted solution.
I opted for a stapled assembly on this build, this allows me to mock assembly making adjustments as I went and will use a slurry to seal the joints after assembly.

Rather than assembling on the floor and hoping this would fit afterwards I also decided to build a basic jig to ensure the roof went together and fitted nicely, capturing key reference points on the roof curvature. That extra hour of work has paid off well and aided my assembly process👌

This is printed in ASA, it will require some finishing but know the client has the skills to make this mint when completed.

NA Mazdaspeed style skirts unlocked 🤟

Pretty happy with the way these have turned out.

Time for a test fit now to see how well they sit on the car👍
