dms in the spotlight!

recently a co-inventor of the dynamic mold system, Ivan Tochev, gave a talk at the re.comm 24, a landmark forum for innovation in real estate, gathering leaders and visionaries from diverse fields.

amongst his projects, Mr. Tochev mentioned dms, dynamic mold system (dms), a patented formwork system enabling to build freeform structures out of concrete.

it is adaptive an reusable for in-situ concrete structures. dms can be used several times and repeatedly brought into different shapes wich significantly cuts cost for freeform structures and shell structures out of concrete.

how it works: the flexible substructruce, the dms beams, is brought into form on site, and are the base for the adaptive and reusable dms panels.

dms has been invented by physicist Ivan Tochev and architect Professor Rames Najjar as an industry disruptive solution for the construction of freeform concrete structures.

our research community is as diverse as it is passionate - we are supported by the the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and work alongside the Department of Structural Design and Timber Engineering at the TU Wien.

dms = optimization of the panel shapes

dms is the first reusable concrete mold system for double curved surfaces and free forms.

not only are dms panels bendable, reusable, and easy to transport (on the construction site), but they also work in sync with the shape optimization software.

Specifically, we offer a method of calculating the most effective shape and placement of every panel, based on the given parameters of the overall framework.

Here is a sneak peak into the testing of a sandwich construction, for the Dynamic Mold System (DMS), an innovative reusable flexible formwork system to build free forms and double curved molds for in Site casted concrete constructions.

As you can see from the picture, we rely on so-called “sandwich” technology, positioning the core material between two outer layers to reduce the panel’s weight while preserving structural integrity.

In the context of DMS, this innovative application ensures a balanced and lightweight construction process, optimizing efficiency and sustainability.

Why Is DMS a Green Technology?

The dynamic mold system is a reusable formwork system and is therefore far more affordable than traditional methods of creating 3-dimensional concrete structures: it generates significant time and cost savings.

Due to its use of the optimal shell-shaped slabs and reversibility of the formwork, it is also a green technology, which saves up to 75% of concrete on dome shapes and produces zero waste on the construction site in terms of casting leftovers.

There are 2 main areas in which our technology is used:

• As an alternative to the conventional production of special formwork
• spheric slabs as a concrete-saving method and therefore ecological alternative for flat ceilings
