Fa. Sommer will be participating in the EGU Flow Regatta 2026 in Vienna, taking place from 3–8 May 2026

The event is part of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly:

It brings together teams to work on practical challenges in fluid dynamics and related technologies. We’re looking forward to engaging with peers, exchanging ideas, and gaining new perspectives.

It’s always valuable to step outside the day-to-day routine, connect with others in the field, and be part of an environment focused on learning and collaboration.
We’ll share a few updates from Vienna along the way.

From medieval water use to modern smart monitoring 💧⚡

The history of the Ill River at Mühletorplatz dates back to the year 909, when its flowing waters were already being harnessed to support local life and industry. Over the centuries, this natural resource has remained a vital part of the region’s development.

In 1909, the first hydropower plant was constructed here — marking a major step into the era of renewable energy and technological progress.

Today, this legacy continues with the installation of the RQ-30+ by Sommer Messtechnik. This advanced sensor system enables precise, real-time measurement of flow and water levels, ensuring efficient operation and sustainable management of the hydropower facility.

A powerful example of how tradition and innovation come together to shape the future of energy 🌍

❄️ Snow Drift Measurement – Key Factor for Reliable Snow Data ❄️

Christoph Sommer from Sommer Messtechnik delivered a technical presentation at the AASC in New York and the State University of New York in Albany.

The audience consisted of approximately 80 professional snow surveyors and observers from multiple U.S. states. The presentation focused on snow drift dynamics, their impact on conventional snow measurements, and the resulting measurement uncertainties.

The talk highlighted the importance of understanding snow drift processes, their effects on snow measurements, and how unaccounted drift can lead to misleading data.
By using modern snow drift sensors, these effects can be measured and interpreted, ultimately helping to improve decision-making and increase safety for people, infrastructure and transportation systems.

By integrating snow drift measurements into observation networks, users can:

• reduce systematic measurement errors
• better interpret spatial variability of snow cover
• improve safety-related decision-making in transportation, hydrology, and avalanche

💧 A Sponge City Needs Data and the Right Measurement Technology

A climate-resilient city functions like a sponge: it absorbs rainwater, stores it, and releases it gradually over time. For this principle to work in practice, measurable data is essential.

The key lies in combining precipitation and runoff measurements.
While precipitation measurement records the input, that is, the rain that has fallen. Runoff measurement shows how much water is actually discharged through channels and systems.

Only by comparing these two values can we see how well a city retains water and where there is potential for improvement.

Why this integration is important:

🔹Verification of the sponge function – How much water is actually stored?
Early warning during heavy rain – Overloads in the sewer network can be detected earlier.
🔹Optimization of blue-green infrastructure – Data shows where impervious surfaces accelerate runoff.
🔹Targeted use of water – Reservoirs can be managed for dry periods.
🔹Measurable success – Municipalities can demonstrate the value of investments in sponge city measures.

🔧Measurement technology as the foundation

With precise sensor technology for precipitation, water level, and flow measurement, Sommer Messtechnik supports cities and operators in making urban water systems transparent and implementing sponge city concepts based on data.
