Offshore pipeline leak - Detect it, confirm it, isolate it, expose it, repair it, test it, and monitor it.
1) Spot the leak
A leak may show up as a pressure drop, unusual flow, gas bubbles, a plume, or disturbed seabed near the pipeline.
2) Confirm it
The team then uses pressure tests, acoustic methods, gas sampling, or diver/ROV inspection to find the exact leak point and assess the damage.
3) Make it safe
The line is usually depressurized or shut in, the area is isolated, and exclusion zones are set before any repair work starts.
4) Inspect and repair
If needed, the seabed is cleared, the pipe is inspected, and the repair method is chosen based on the damage. Common fixes include a sealing clamp, a composite wrap, or replacing the damaged section.
5) Test and restart
After the repair, the line is tested again, then brought back online carefully while the team continues to monitor it.
