In Zambia, many homes still rely on old circuit breakers that only protect against overloads and short circuits. However, an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) provides an extra layer of protection by guarding against electric shock. If a person accidentally touches a live wire or a faulty appliance, a small amount of current begins leaking through their body to earth. In a normal breaker, this current is too small to trip it, meaning the person could suffer a severe or even fatal shock. With an ELCB installed, the device constantly monitors the current in the live and neutral wires. If it senses even a tiny imbalance, as little as 30 milliamps (0.03A), it immediately disconnects power, usually in under 0.03 seconds. That is faster than the time it takes for the heart to go into fibrillation. The person may still feel a mild shock, but it is usually not fatal.
However, if someone touches both the live and neutral wires at the same time, the current flowing in and out remains balanced, and the ELCB will not detect a fault. In that case, the device may not trip, and the person can still receive a dangerous shock. This is why it is important to combine the ELCB with other protective devices such as Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) for overload and short-circuit protection.
In short, the ELCB cuts power almost instantly when electricity tries to pass through your body to earth, greatly reducing the risk of death from electric shock and giving you a second chance at life.
