A Valeo type IST / I-STAR alternator refers to a specific Valeo alternator family designed primarily for Start‑Stop vehicle systems, where IST stands for:

Integrated Starter Technology

What that means in practice
An IST alternator is not a conventional alternator. It is a reinforced alternator that can operate both as:

a generator (charging the battery), and
a starter motor (restarting the engine quickly when Start‑Stop activates).

This allows the engine to switch off at traffic lights and restart smoothly, improving fuel economy and emissions.

Key Characteristics of Valeo IST Alternators
1. Start‑Stop functionality

Designed for frequent engine restarts
Faster, quieter restarts than traditional starters
Much higher durability than standard alternators

2. Belt‑driven starter‑generator

Driven by a reinforced belt system
Uses a stronger rotor, bearings, and rectifier
Can handle high torque in motor mode

3. Higher electrical demands

Typically 120A–180A, depending on vehicle
Works with AGM or EFB batteries
Communicates with the vehicle ECU (LIN/BSS)

In its early years, the group operated branches in Springs (Automotive & Industrial), Witbank, Nelspruit, and Swaziland, serving a growing customer base with premium automotive solutions. These branches were later sold through management buyouts in the early 2000s, paving the way for Kalundu Trading to focus on its core strength—importing, exporting, and distributing alternators, starter motors, and related parts for light, medium, and heavy-duty applications.
