Wings At Our Feet

Wings At Our Feet Join in to support and watch our journey unfold as we cycle Africa's wild roads for CANSA. What’s Our Story? What’s this For? Why “Wings At Our Feet”?

About Us:
We are two good friends who are pedalling the wild roads of Africa on route northward. We have split our journey into stages, doing bits of Africa where and when we have the opportunity. The first leg in 2012/13 took us from Cape Town to Kosi (Mozambique border). The next stage, currently under construction and will take us from Richards Bay, South Africa to Harare, Zimbabwe. The truly e

pic adventure is backed with a big heart to try to make a difference within our generation. Money raised through our efforts will go towards facilitating youth and school awareness programmes, as CANSA’s Youth on the Move which continues to promote a healthy future for our youth. Something that started with a small idea, grew into a semi-conscious dream and then bloomed into reality. This is a story of adventure that we challenge ourselves with. Our adventure incorporates bicycles, a destination, film equipment, sunblock and lots of pedalling. Whilst on route we connect with as many cultures as possible and see as much of the natural beauty that Africa has to offer. We are partnering with CANSA as we peddle to raise awareness and funds for the effects of skin cancer and carcinogens. A initiave of CANSA called, Youth on the Move, targets and challenges the youth of South Africa to lead healthy and well balanced lifestyles. With emphasis on exercise, healthy and balanced eating habits, avoiding intoxicating oneself with alcohol, smoking and obesity. The aim of Youth on the Move is to reduce lifestyle related diseases, such as cancer, for South Africa’s future generation. We call ourselves “Wings at our feet” because of an awesome guy named Greg. We once met whilst cycling along Chapman’s Peak drive and he inspired us to set off on our first cycle. Greg had just completed chemo yet he still cycled every weekend and has his own ambition to tour by bicycle to raise funds for his autistic Daughter. Greg said to us, “You go for it! You have wings at your feet and can do anything you set your eyes on.” This stuck with us as it embodies our adventurous spirit and the message CANSA campaign Youth on the Move portrays. Since our meeting in 2012, Greg has started his own tour. Check it out: http://www.gregscycletour.co.za/

We back from remote parts of Zimbabwe, which have stunned us with absolute beauty aswell as some hefty dirt roads. The eastern highlands of Zimbabwe, namely a stretch between Chimanami and Cashel is defiantly a highlight of the trip. Tonight we in Mutare after a short afternoon visit into Mozambique and an overnight stay in Vumba Valley. Tomorrow we make our way to Harare, and then starts the four day journey to Cape Town. What an epic, fun, tough at times but rewarding journey this has been so far.

Another day on the bike before sunrise for steady pedalling but mostly pushing up the these Swazi hills! Tonight we staying in Bulembu with the most amazing family which we met whilst tending to some bicycle maintaince. With open arms they offered to help us and invited for a braai and a warm shower! Do yourself a favour and check out what they doing, http://www.bulembu.org/

In 2001, the mining company that had built and operated Bulembu for more than 60 years, closed its doors and walked away. With no jobs the town was soon abandoned, even as Swaziland continues to be ravaged by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the resulting orphan crisis.
