Robotic Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is transforming the production of large metal components, and the MX3D MX System has been specifically developed to address this challenge.

The MX System enables manufacturers to produce certified, large-scale metal parts faster and with greater flexibility than traditional supply chains, with printed components reaching up to 20,000 kg and build volumes of 5 x 5 x 5 metres. Powered by industrial robotics and MX3D’s proprietary software, the system integrates toolpath generation, real-time process control, and continuous monitoring into one streamlined workflow.

The result is reliable and efficient production, supporting repeatable manufacturing of complex geometries with reduced lead times, lower material waste, and full traceability.
Across maritime, energy, and heavy industry sectors, companies are using the MX System to shift from extended procurement cycles to on-demand manufacturing, without compromising quality or standards.

As a reseller of MX3D systems, we are ready to support the introduction of this large-scale WAAM capability across Africa, enabling local industries to manufacture complex metal components closer to the point of need.

Metal AM brings next-level performance to foldable smartphones.

OPPO is one of the world’s leading smartphone brands known for innovation, sleek design and great features.

But when developing their latest foldable phone, they faced a tough engineering challenge.
The hinge needed to be lighter, stronger and more compact without compromising on durability or performance.
Traditional manufacturing methods couldn’t deliver the precision or structural efficiency they were aiming for.

That’s when OPPO turned to BLT for help. Using metal AM and titanium, they were able to:

🟢 Cut hinge weight by over 30% using a custom lattice design
🟢 Boost strength and durability in a smaller footprint
🟢 Reduce part count for simplified assembly and better integration

To us it’s a great example of how metal AM is helping companies push past design limits and improve performance at the same time.

As the official BLT technology reseller in the region, AMT3D enables manufacturers in Africa to access and implement advanced metal additive manufacturing solutions like these.

Metal AM innovation for improved eVTOL propulsion

At AMT 3D, we support aerospace manufacturers with advanced Bright Laser Technologies - BLT metal additive manufacturing solutions for high-performance applications such as eVTOL propulsion.

eVTOL aircraft require lightweight, high-power propulsion systems with efficient thermal management in small spaces. As power density increases, structural and thermal requirements must be addressed within the same limited envelope.

The motor stator bracket is a critical core component. It provides structural support while also contributing to heat dissipation.
Using BLT Europe GmbH metal AM technology, a stator bracket was designed that integrates structural support and thermal management into one single component. Conformal heat pipes and cooling fins are integrated directly into the bracket body to maximise heat dissipation.

The part was built on the BLT-S400 6-laser system using BLT AlSi10Mg. The design is lightweight and high strength, optimised for high-power motor performance in space-constrained eVTOL platforms. The solution can be adapted to different eVTOL configurations.

For propulsion engineers, this demonstrates how metal additive manufacturing enables structure and function integration in critical components for next-gen air mobility.

Bridging the industrial skills gap starts in the university lab.

Manufacturing is advancing rapidly toward hybrid workflows that combine additive and subtractive processes. Yet many institutions are still working to align academic training with the realities of modern shop floors.

Kansas State University and the University of Arizona have addressed this by integrating Meltio 's wire-laser Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology directly onto Haas CNC platforms through a hybrid configuration. The result is a contained, CNC-integrated solution that enables seamless transition between printing and machining within a single enclosure.

The impact is measurable:
K-State’s Technology Development Institute manufactures defence-certified components for the Department of Defense.
The University of Arizona demonstrated that students with no prior CNC experience could progress to producing certified parts within two weeks.
Dual-wire capability supports complex alloys such as Stainless, Inconel, and Nickel, enabling both advanced research and undergraduate training.

This approach delivers dual-use value: an industrial workhorse for research and certified component production, while simultaneously building workforce readiness.

At AMT 3D, we support universities in establishing industry-aligned additive manufacturing facilities, ensuring proper integration, training, and long-term capability development.

Setting up an advanced manufacturing facility at a university is a strategic decision, not a procurement exercise.
For advanced manufacturing to grow in Africa, university facilities must be designed to be used, not admired.

At AMT 3D, we have extensive experience in establishing research and academic manufacturing facilities that are active, productive, and aligned with real academic and industry outcomes.

Our approach goes beyond supplying equipment. We work closely with institutions to understand their research objectives, curriculum needs, skills base, and budget constraints before recommending technologies and facility structures that make long-term sense.

The result is facilities that avoid becoming “white elephants” and instead remain relevant, utilised, and valuable to students, researchers, and industry partners alike.

Our involvement continues well beyond installation. We provide training, skills transfer, and ongoing technical support, ensuring academic teams are confident and supported as capabilities grow.

Because we value academia, we see universities as the foundation of a thriving additive manufacturing ecosystem in Africa. We are proud to have been involved in multiple university facility set-up projects across the region, all of which are actively operating and delivering impact.

If you’re considering a facility, or even exploring ideas out of curiosity, get in touch.
We’re always open to the conversation.

Where motorsport performance meets metal additive manufacturing.

Engineering compromises are not an option, they are the difference between the podium and the paddock.

For the Málaga Racing Team (MART), the 2025 season introduced a fully electric powertrain for their new challenger, the MA25RT. While electric drive delivers superior torque and acceleration, it also brings a significant weight challenge through the battery pack.

To offset this, the team focused on the rear upright (wheel carrier), a critical structural component subjected to braking, cornering and vertical loads. Using Meltio Wire-Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology, MART produced 35% lighter titanium uprights, achieving a level of mass reduction that would not have been possible through conventional machining, without compromising stiffness.

This is exactly where metal additive manufacturing creates value, enabling weight reduction, functional optimisation and design freedom in components where performance margins are tight.
As a Formula Student team from the University of Málaga, MART FS also demonstrates how access to industrial AM technology accelerates learning, innovation and real-world engineering outcomes.

“This collaboration not only allowed us to enhance the performance of our race car but also to massively expand our knowledge of one of the most promising technologies shaping the future of manufacturing.” - MART Team
