Here’s a little trick that can save you from unnecessary wear:

Don’t drive around with your foot resting on the clutch pedal 👀

Even if you’re only applying a tiny bit of pressure, you can cause the clutch release bearing to work when it doesn’t need to. Over time, that can contribute to premature clutch wear.

The same goes for resting your hand on the gear lever. It might feel natural, but constant pressure can place unnecessary load on components inside the gearbox.

So:

🦶 Left foot: Footrest, not clutch.
✋ Right hand: Steering wheel, not gear lever.
🚗 Gearbox: Let it do its job in peace. 😂

They’re tiny driving habits, but avoiding unnecessary pressure on components can help your vehicle’s clutch and gearbox last longer.

Welcome to spring in South Africa! 🌤️😅🇿🇦

After months of dry, dusty conditions, the first rains can create a particularly slippery road surface as water mixes with dust, oil and other residue. Add reduced visibility, potholes hidden by standing water and sudden storms, and your car suddenly has a lot more to deal with.

So, before spring really gets going, give these 5 things a quick check:

1️⃣🛞 TYRES – Check pressure, tread and uneven wear. Your tyres are your only contact with the road, and good tread is essential for moving water away from the tyre.

2️⃣🛑 BRAKES – If they’re squeaking, grinding, vibrating or feeling different, don’t ignore it.

3️⃣🌧️ WIPERS – Those blades that survived the dry winter? They may not be ready for their big comeback. Cracked or hardened wipers can seriously affect visibility.

4️⃣💡 LIGHTS – Make sure your headlights, brake lights, indicators and hazards are all working. Rain and mist can reduce visibility quickly.

5️⃣❄️ DEMISTER & AIR-CON – Don’t forget these! Keeping your windscreen clear is a safety issue, not just a comfort issue.

And here’s the big one:

‼️ Don’t drive according to the speed limit 👉 drive according to the conditions 🌧️‼️

If the road is wet, visibility is poor or a storm rolls in, slow down and increase your following distance. Recent road-safety guidance from the RTMC specifically highlights rapidly changing spring weather, sudden storms, strong winds and reduced visibility.

Oh, and with fuel prices having increased at the start of September, keeping your tyres correctly inflated and your vehicle properly maintained can also help avoid wasting fuel.

If your daily routine consists of short trips to work, school or the shops, here’s something you may not know…

Your engine needs time to reach its ideal operating temperature. On short journeys, it often doesn’t get the chance.

This can lead to:
🔧 Increased engine wear.
⛽ Higher fuel consumption.
💧 Moisture building up in the engine oil.
🌫️ Carbon deposits forming over time.

The good news? 🤷‍♂️ It’s an easy fix! 👏🏻

Every now and then, take your vehicle for a longer drive—around 20 to 30 minutes—especially at highway speeds where it’s safe and legal to do so. This allows the engine to warm up properly, helping it run more efficiently and reducing unnecessary wear.

Modern vehicles are far more advanced than most people realize. Hidden beneath the bonnet is a network of computers working together to keep your vehicle running smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
